First steps at SHF

Post by SteveHopwood »

There is a lot of stuff here at SHF, much of it redundant but left in place in case anyone finds it useful. You have come here after reading my Welcome message to you, so here is how to get started.

The threads to visit first are:
  • TDesk at viewtopic.php?p=163522#p163522
    • This is a stunning tool created by Thomas (user name tomele). It allows you to use TDesk-compatible indicators to devise and test your own trading strategies. TDesk will generate the relevant open and close trade signals.
  • Desky at viewtopic.php?p=164249#p164249
    • This is the drone EA that reacts to TDesk's signals and handles all of the trading for you.
  • TDesk Universal Drones at viewtopic.php?p=167161#p167161
    • These act as interfaces between conventional indicators and TDesk. You can load your own combination of indicators into them and so are not limited to those specially converted to send data to TDesk.
  • Leon's HGI thread at viewtopic.php?p=163218#p163218
    • Leon (user name Wavegarrick) is one of our best thinkers. He has been researching and developing his method for nearly four years.
TDesk is not immediately simple to grasp, so take your time reading what it is all about. Your time will be well rewarded. The combo of TDesk + Desky + the Universal Drones is powerful beyond anything that most of you can imagine.

All this software runs on the Empty4 platform. For US citizens trading with OANDA, Johnah is developing software that allows you to run the Empty4 programs on a Global Prime demo (I talk about GP further down) and then imitates this behaviour on your OANDA platform. viewtopic.php?p=165552#p165552

----------------------

We are catering here at SHF, for inexperienced traders, or even those of you with no experience. I have written several booklets that take noobs from scratch to trading. Download the, "Forex trading getting started" zip file from viewtopic.php?p=174961#p174961 Park it somewhere convenient, open it and start by reading part 1 of the guide.

There is excellent teaching and mentoring available from rewand at viewtopic.php?p=175597#p175597

-------------------
Problems accessing SHF

Members occasionally run into problems such as logging in etc. The place to send queries about this is: [email protected]. You will be presented with your usual email provider, separate from the SHF system.Use this email to ensure that your problem can be addressed. Make a note of this folks, somewhere separate from SHF so you always know where to go for help.

--------------------

Important Terms for Newbies
These are terms bandied around regularly on SHF that might confuse you initially. Us old stagers have been around this stuff for a long time and are very cynical:
  • Criminal/Crim: Brokers. The scum that 90% of the time just want to take your money. Global Prime are true brokers and you can trust them completely.
  • Empty4: Fairly obvious but this is MetaTrader4 that lets us down so often. Don't believe me? You will soon.
  • Craptester: the Empty4 back tester called Strategy Tester. It is rubbish.
  • Cretins at Crapperquotes: the morons that created the ludicrous monstrosity that is Empty4.
  • EA's: Expert advisors. These are the coded systems responsible for things such as generating signals, trading signals or processing and sending information to other EA's or databases.
---------------

Silent lurkers
Silent lurkers are welcome here at SHF; you have the right idea. There are no kudos for volume of posts. Lurk silently to your hearts' content. Say nothing if you have nothing useful or intelligent to say. Make a noise when you have nothing useful or intelligent to say, and I will delete your registration without warning. If in doubt, stay quiet. Speak when you have learned enough to speak intelligently and you will be instantly recognised as a valued member. There are valued members here who went from zero to hero in a couple of days after years of silent membership.

-------------------

Our own brokerage firm
Once you are familiar with Jem's work, you will recognise him as the star that he truly is. Here is the best news. He runs a brokerage firm - Afterprime. You can trade with Afterprime confident in the knowledge that they will not use the usual range of dirty tricks to part you from your account deposit. It would be hard to miss the forum that highlights Afterprime, but just in case you have missed it somehow, here is the link: viewtopic.php?p=175790#p175790

In the same subforum, I have added a thread explaining the difference between the various types of 'broker' and why you should sign up with Afterprime to avoid all the nasty tricks the pretend-brokers get up to: viewtopic.php?f=52&t=1475

I only trade through Afterprime.

Newcomers/relative newcomers to the wild west of Forex trading, have you wondered why those EA's that you purchased for $99 or more and that showed such stellar results lost you a fortune the instant you loaded them onto a live chart? Have you wondered why the trading system that you paid hundreds of dollars to purchase from a 'guru' who showed fantastic profits, failed the instant you tried to apply the 'lessons' to your trading?

The sellers are scammers. It is easy and cheap to rent a server that allows you to manipulate trading results so that they look fantastically profitable. All of us could do it. Here is a link to a video that explains how: https://stevehopwoodforex.com/downloads/FakeForex.mp4

---------------------

Make your lives easier
You will find yourself setting up a lot of charts. Use TDesk to make this quick and easy.

------------------------

Manual trading threads:
Bob's (nanningbob) SUPER CSS-2.0 Read about it at viewtopic.php?f=88&t=4888 then download the latest version of the indi from viewtopic.php?p=146488#p146488 Truly folks, trading systems have never come simpler than this. Slopey Peaky Bob is successful because of this indi.

Bob's Holy Grail Indicator
People are making a bomb out of the Holy Grail Indicator. Bob has come up with a concept that tells us when to trade and exit, and when not to trade. Elixe and milanese have coded this into an indicator, coding which is breathtaking in its scope and execution. Visit Bob's Holy Grail Indicator thread at viewtopic.php?p=105044#p105044 right now. Immediately, Go. Now.

HGI has revolutionised trading. All we have to do is react to its signals. Visit the relevant chart when you hear an alert and do what HGI tells you to do. An infant could trade with this indi.

Renexxxx has a great-looking Matrix at viewtopic.php?p=105462#p105462

So guys, not only do we have Bob's amazing HGI but we have fabulous tools to help us use them (including some automation - see below). Try them out and see what works for you.

----------------

US citizens, check out spgandau's thread at viewtopic.php?p=117460#p117460. He has come up with ways of getting around the absurd FIFO rules.

----------------

There are a number of groups that you might care to join. Read the details in my Welcome thread at viewtopic.php?p=2#p2 This also contains a description of what the individual forums are all about.

----------------

Our Commercial Section
We have a section devoted to stuff developed by our members that is available for some sort of fee/license. Criminal bollocks is not allowed here, and crims quickly get their bollocks removed.

Here is a rare thing - a commercial product that I endorse. Read about it at viewtopic.php?f=17&t=5041&p=151107#p151107. My critical endorsement is in post 2 of the thread.

There is a commercial VPS service run by one of our members. I use it; it is fantastic. Read about it at viewtopic.php?p=156450#p156450

----------------

Weekly round up
Every week I post a round up at market open, detailing stuff of interest to members that they may have missed. You can join this group by clicking the 'Subscriptions' link near the top of the board index. I post a copy of this at viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2294 Unless I have forgotten, I have attached the latest one to this pm so you can see the sort of thing I write. You could be seeing a copy in advance if today is Sunday.

----------------

SHF no-no's.
There are two things you need to avoid discussing under any circumstances:
  • Martingale: you will be seduced by this if you are new to Forex and meet it for the first time. The principle is simple: double your lot size every time you close a trade at a loss and the eventual, inevitable winner will recover your losses.
    • it is only 9 steps until your lot size is over 5 lots. You will have blown your account a long time before reaching that stage.
    • If Martingaling worked, everyone who ever traded the Forex markets would be filthy, stinking rich. It doesn't, so we aren't. Here is a useful thread: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=547
  • Backtesting, either as a paper exercise or testing EA's in Empty4's Strategy Tester. This thread explains why: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=4020. Do not make the serious mistake of trying to argue that it does have value in evaluating a trading system; you will get into trouble with the mods. Strategy Tester is useful for testing that EA/Indi/Script code is working as the coder intends.
----------------

And finally, about me
I am a pianist and piano teacher. If you enjoy teen lunacy and want a few laughs at my expense, then visit this thread: viewtopic.php?p=84559#p84559

In my spare time, I learned to program in a variety of different computer languages, always for my business purposes. I came across Forex trading in 2006 and joined what claims to be the largest Forex forum ヨ ForexFactory.com I quickly allied my interest in coding with producing about 5 trading EA's a week, EA's that I made freely available at FF.

I built an international reputation from these activities and so was able to start this forum in November of 2011. FF members joined here and this forum took the shape it now has ヨ an unparalleled meeting of the most talented, creative and generous Forex traders available on the planet. I benefit from their expertise every day of my life.

In conclusion
Have fun folks. The rest of us are.
Read the effing manual, ok?

Afterprime is the official SHF broker. Read about them at https://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=175790#p175790.

I still suffer from OCCD. Good thing, really.

Anyone here feeling generous? My paypal account is always in the market for a tiny donation. [email protected] is the account.
