Great thread, thanks so much! Is it necessary to go for the windows 2008 VPS? Or is 2003 OK?

Windows 2003 is just fine in my opinion. Up until recently i was still choosing it for my VPS. Keep in mind on July 14, 2015, all Windows 2003 support, including security updates and security-related hotfixes, will be terminated. http://support.microsoft.com/lifecycle/ ... er+2003+R2

Thanks bshoe, can I please ask what made you change presumably to 2008? Sorry for the questions, VPS is very new to me and I'm still trying to wrap my head around it. I opened one with 'Crucial' here in Australia to try it out for a month just to learn a bit about it. I think I was hacked rather quickly and I was getting e-mails from Crucial saying 'naughty, naughty... your IP has been noted doing naughty things!' So this thread will be a great help in setting up a new one shortly!

There is an argument that Windows 2008 is slightly better performing network wise. Really it's just a preference that i like Win2k8 more now as i've adjusted to it. It's hard to say what happened without knowing more.... If you got "hacked" quickly as you say then you may have not had your firewall running or you didn't immediately update the VPS with Windows updates when you got it and maybe got malware via a "drive by download" hack of unpatched Internet Explorer visiting a compromised website or a website hosting an Ad that delivers malware - which is common. Lots of infection vectors possible... Might be better to PM if you have any sensitive questions.

Thanks mate, just so the forum knows I am not slagging off Crucial, and you are probably correct in that I didn't install updates etc on time I really can;t recall, it was a couple months ago. Thanks again for a great thread!
