V 1b is in post 1. I added the extra trade-closure function described by Shelley at http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 705#p76705

Post subject:  Re: Different sort of BASA

I am taking a slight detour with DBASA. Something that was mentioned a few weeks ago triggered an idea that has been nagging at the back of my mind for weeks. It finally forced its' way to the front of mind, and I am presenting it here.

Quite a while ago, there was a thread on FF started by Forexhard (Fxh)called Stairstep Breakout system. A very well defined and successful set of trading rules, supported by the development of an extraordinary indicator. Located here for those of you unfamiliar with it; http://www.forexfactory.com/showthread.php?t=302007 Although an EA for this method was worked on, and developed to some level, it was never published on FF to my knowledge. However, the method is still an excellent manual trading system.

As much as I like the SSBO system, I happen to like auto-trading. It's not laziness, I just like having the computer do some of the work for me when I can get it to do what I want, rather than what I tell it.

While working with BASA and DBASA I visually started to see consolidation zones similar to the ones that FXH had outlined in his SSBO thread. I put an SSBO indicator on a chart along with my DBASA template and was struck by the similarities. Attached is a screenshot of GBPUSD on a 15M chart. Notice the grey consolidation zones as indicated by FXH's SSBO indicator. The DBASA envelope and subsequent breakouts mirror the SSBO breakouts pretty closely. In the original SSBO thread, FXH is a proponent of a very clean chart, no additional indicators, and taking a breakout trade regardless of with trend, or countertrend. I do not have his trading experience, nor his trading cojones. I tend to be a trend follower.

DBASA allows me to search for breakout trades, in the direction of the trend defined by the [Price | 60 LWMA | 240 LWMA] concept.

A couple of caveats:

1. This is a departure from fxozgirl's BASA method. This departure may serve only to be a kick in the proverbial cojones.
2. This is also a departure Forexhard's method. For the most part, I am using his indicator as an illustration on the attached chart.
3. I have borrowed liberally from Nanningbob, Fxozgirl, Steve Hopwood, and Forexhard. Thanks to each of you for your ideas and your hard work.

I will report back as soon as I have some forward testing results to report.

Tom

PS in case anyone else wants to try this, the fast MA is 55 LWMA, the slow is a 240 LWMA. The MA Dynamic envelope is a 55 period moving average with a 100 period atr envelope at a multiple of 1.2.

Steve:

Please take a look at the attached chart. DBASA took a sell trade while price was between the 60 LWMA and the 240 LWMA. Seems to me that this should be a "no trade zone".

Any ideas as to why it would take it ?

I do no think that DBASA has kept up with all the improvements in BASA. Could that be a reason for this trade ?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Nope. Can't read your charts with your horrible colour scheme.

Possibly. Don't know. Don't care. You asked me to code something, so I coded it. Don't remember what it was. I have no further interest in it and will remove my subscription from this thread so my attention is no longer drawn to it.

In case anyone is following along, I have sorted out what I was doing wrong that caused the errant trade. To be clear, the EA took a trade according to the rules as coded. It was doing what it was told, rather than what I wanted. I suspect I'm not the only one to have that happen in course of using a program. I have made modifications and will happily share when I prove to myself that it works.

After an email conversation with Steve, and in order to avoid too much complication, I am going to sideline this effort until the development on BASA has stabilized further.
