I gladly like to participate in the discussion on the exit strategy of losing trades. It is a common recurring dilemma in the beautiful EA's of Mr. Garcia. The balance grows while the equity gap is widening. There are several ways tried, some with more success than others but the gap is still not where we want it to be. (That's at least my opinion.) I like to share an idea based on an article I read a few weeks ago. Is it THE solution? I have no idea, but it might be worth the shot. No stoploss creates large drawdown. Too small of a stoploss means premature closure of trades that can generate profits. And too big of a stoploss means unnecessary loss of profit optimization. Simply put; having the correct SL set is extremely difficult, perhaps even too difficult. It depends on each own situation, the price action, the moment of trading, news events, the pair that is traded etc. I believe that all these external factors never really can be successfully incorporated in an EA. Mechanical methods such as a fixed or indicator trailing stops for exit logic are poor methods for long term timing and consistency. It may work in the short term but the probabilities weigh heavily against you for the long term. The market changes too frequently for such static risk management to remain effective forever. Therefore, I like to share another view on the matter. For a good exit strategy, you must first find a good entry strategy. A good exit strategy can mostly make a profit on it's own, independent on the entry strategy. You win a trade not on your entry, but on your exit strategy. But if the entry strategy is not right it becomes harder to manage the trades, especially if you're running EA's that have 40 or more trades open. Fortunately many of Mr. Garcia EA's have a successful entry strategy, on the first trade. But I'm not a fan of adding lots during a trade session for any other purpose than scaling in on a trade. Many of Mr. Garcia EA's use the grid principle and in all honesty sooner or later you will lose with a grid system. In my view of EA trading you open only 1 trade per pair and then manage this trade to the best possibility. You make long-term profits on the way you are managing your trades. Getting rich quickly in the Forex world works in most cases only if you are already rich. You want an EA which consistently builds up your account in both balance and equity over the months and years. It is not a get rich quick scheme, but a long-term investment to build financial independence over the years. An EA offers the possibility to do other things, while it makes money for you. Do what you love or earn extra money and deposit every month a little extra in the account of your EA. (Only if you can spare the cash.) The Forex world offers at any time uncertainty, but a well-constructed EA knows how to deal with this sort of uncertainty as long as you think in the long term. For an entry strategie is Pipcruiser's Pipmasher in my opinion a wonderful example of a strategy which will be successful in the long term. In some way the same goes for the first entry of EuroSpeedWay and Mr. Sapu his strategy. Take no offense in this, but if I may say; in my opinion are these the strategies that we have to focus on. I am of the view that any strategy that’s designed for anything under the 1-Hour timeframe will lack in consistency and risk management over the long term. Derive the majority of your information from higher timeframes than H1, with only some additional filters on the M15 timeframe for entry and exit purposes. Now having said this, let's discuss the exit strategy for losing trades. For the exit strategy of losing trades, I recommend a hedging strategy with pending orders. It is about capital preservation. If a trade goes into negative, the recovery mechanism kicks in. There are several commercial variants of this principle which I like to show you Mr. Garcia, but I would like to do this privately. I'm not trying to sell a system. I'm just trying to give you inspiration and an idea for a possible solution so we can design and build it up from scratch. I like to hear from anyone and like to work together with all of you to build success. With sincere respect, The Wolf |

Hi, I am very grateful for the ideas about the Automatic Loss Recovery (ALR) exposed in this forum, and also for the ideas presented by The Wolf. But as have seen in another thread about Loss Recovery: http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... =81&t=3929 the treatment of a basket of trades (with many positions in the same pair) it is very difficult and complicated. For that I do not want to use hedging nor pending orders. If someone has the old !xMeters EAs, I used there scaling and hedging with mixed results. Also I do not want to employ trades with negative swaps. For that I have created my own ALR Basket Manager included in the following EA. Let's see. Regards José Luis NEW VERSION IN A LATER POST |

Firstly I would like to thank Jose for sharing his work, and everybody else on this forum.. Could a fixed percentage stop loss not be used? A DD limit, then close all the trades off? Alternatively just reduce trades an lot size to make constant smaller gains gains with low DD? It amazes me that people here think an EA is crap because it doesn't make 10% per month. 2% is all you need in the long term. Whats important is a constant track record with low DD and you will have people fighting to throw money at you to trade for them.. If you manage a £1,000,000 account of someone else's money and make 2% per month that is £20,000. You take a performance fee of 30% (which is standard) which is £6,000 per month. Some managed accounts can be £10,000,000 or £20,000,000. But you need a constant track record in the first place to get clients. You do not need to smash it with high lot sizes with high DD trading with an ea, or trading manually. I'm sure there are literally hundreds of EA's on this forum that could be used to make a full time living off, but it the expectations that make them look rubbish and the self induced pressure to try and grow a small account as fast as you can. Why not save your money, then when you have enough to trade-then trade with an EA? Just my 2 cents... |

I'll try to to keep trade number lower next week, we'll see... By the way, I have to express my gratitude to all you guys who share such a valubale know how with us :hi: |

Hi, I think that all the members of this forum must take into account the following warning: before they use the EA posted in the first post. Regards José Luis |

Another solution is maybe to use the EA only during a session and stop it at the end. Next week I'm going to try EPL with 6 pairs (EURUSD,EURGBP,GBPUSD,EURJPY,USDJPY and GBPJPY) only London session. I'll report results. I'm french and I'm very sad about the victims in Paris. |

I'm sorry guys but I humbly disagree with a lot of things posted here in the last few posts. Using ALR, scaling, hedging, limiting trading hours or pairs, avoiding news, etc., are just attempts at avoiding the inevitable. Much like martingale or other progression strategies. They might work great for some time until they simply don't. It's the nature of the market, you can't possibly predict every future variable. You WILL blow your account if you don't use a (pre)defined cut-off point for negative trades. This can be in your mind if you're confident in analyzing the market, or it can be a simple predefined stoploss, or a percentage of drawdown like mackaozy suggests. In the end it's all down to your appetite for risk and what you feel comfortable losing. I can offer you a quick example. Look at this image: 1000% profit in less than a year and a half? Sign me up! Now look a the full statement: http://www.myfxbook.com/members/Cuzgeor ... -12/721581 This is one of José's own EA's. It looked amazing for a long time. Wouldn't you consider, after using it on demo for a year, that it would be a good candidate for your live account? Imagine putting it on your live account and having it crash within a few months... You absolutely NEED to prepare for the worst. If it can happen, it will happen, there's no way around this. José kindly provides us with great tools but, as he points out in is latest post here, they are not "set-and-forget" tools. I optimistically believe they can be with the right exit strategy for negative trades That's what I'm focusing on, and that's what I'd like to see tested and discussed here in the forum. Right now everyone can use MPTM to test their favorite exit strategy on any of José's EAs. It's very easy to set up. Have a great weekend guys! b. |
