Re: 10.2; the auto-trading EA is born.

Post by Dewey McG »

Hello all,

I am not a coder nor do I have the experience of someone like Bob, but I do OK with my trading and wanted to see if I could contribute something so I ran a few backtests. I started off with three pairs from a low, medium and high volatility group and used the period from January 1st, 2011 until May 20, 2012 just to get a quick look. Backtests are not completely reliable even with a 90% or better modeling quality, but it can help tell if something is worth pursuing further and steer you away from ticking time bombs. Forward tests are much more reliable.

I chose 2% risk to run the back tests, though less would be smarter with running so many pairs. Two of the three were winners with good but not brilliant profit factors. Drawdown was reasonably low.

Have a look at one of the stop losses. Watching these manually I think one could ahve avoided the larger ones.

Results:

EURUSD
1273.45 net profit
Profit factor 1.91
94.17% trades in profit
Average profit trade: 23.64 Average Loss trade: -199.76
8.13% maximal drawdown
8.13% relative drawdown
AUDUSD
-220.28 net profit
Profit factor .9
70.13% trades in profit
Average profit trade: 36.03 Average Loss trade: -94.17
9.07% maximal drawdown
9.07% relative drawdown

GBPCHF
530.28 net profit
Profit factor 1.7
92.86% trades in profit
Average profit trade: 19.87 Average Loss trade: -152.31
4.75% maximal drawdown
4.75% relative drawdown

I can send complete results to anyone who is interested.

mobthehop wrote:Gary, this is helpful but I would not necessarily distinguish the different trade tfs as the methodology / trade conditions are same on H1/H4 / D1....
Really? But verb listed specific different cases for D1 TMA/WOH, H4 TMA/WOH, etc. I think the concept is the same regardless of the TF, but are the specifics? Have to read through NB again...
Over at FF, Binyamin just posted the following flow chart, which, I believe, is quite similar to your table - see attached. I think the referenced "blue line" is the MA 5 shift 1 of NB10.2 templates
That's beautiful! Simple, clear, concise, and it's easy to see what to do. It doesn't contain a lot of the detail of the codex or my table (which I assume is necessary??) but it's great to understand the logic.

Thanks for posting that. I just don't have time to follow FF too...
As we are talking about 24 different currencies and I am quite partial to the "ducks in the row concept", I would be very interested to develop a traffic light system of 4-5 conditions that need to be met, then place pending buy x pips over next S/R line for break condition AND a pending sell y pips below next S/R line (for bounce at S/R)
An indicator like that would be handy for manual trading. Or are you talking about an EA?
would you be able to help me understand pivots (as calculated in NB 10.2) vs Fibonacci based pivots based weekly open time (eg London open vs NY Open vs criminal open) etc - I simply don't get it
The pivots are pretty easy. The NB Pivots indicators use the standard pivot definition. For weekly pivots, last_low &etc is the low &etc of last week.

P=(last_high+last_low+last_close)/3;
R1=(2*P)-last_low;
S1=(2*P)-last_high;
R2=P+(last_high-last_low);
S2=P-(last_high-last_low);
R3=(2*P)+(last_high-(2*last_low));
S3=(2*P)-((2*last_high)-last_low);

See e.g. http://www.tradejuice.com/forex/pivot-p ... ing-mm.htm. Different sources use slightly different formulas to calculate the levels, but if you work out the math, they're doing the same thing.

Now for the Fib levels based on time, I have no clue. I don't know how those are calculated.

Hi all.

I'm glad to be here and find everybody whose posts I looked after over the last year or so and helped me to understand what is this forex about :) .... used (tested) some of Steve EAs...

I was in the last week watching the development of NB EA and am impressed with the results. However today the bot took like 50 buys GBPCHF and closed them right after. There was one open trade from last night on GBPCHF and was closed in the BE I think (I'm at work don't have the charts available).....I think it happend everithing after thi order was closed.

[quote="garyfritz"]I'm still learning the system. I'm finding Verb's codex to be very useful -- now I'm just trying to find where Verb found those things in NB's booklets. :D

I wanted a bit more visual representation of the info in Verb's codex, so I condensed all the entry conditions into a table. This way you can easily see how the various entry types differ, or scan down the columns to see "OK if the H4 TMA is this and the H1 TMA is that, what should I be doing?"

Not sure if this will actually be helpful, but I offer it here in case it helps somebody understand this stuff. Please let me know if you find any errors.

Here it is in the order Verb listed them in his codex:

Here it is sorted with long entries first, short entries second:

Are you sure that for RUTB D1 TMA is to be >0.4 and not > 0.8. I read it differently in NNBob book I guess. Pls confirm. Thanks

I used verb's codex as my source, since it's more concise and I find it easier to interpret. The codex has been checked pretty carefully so I assume it's correct -- let us know if you find an error in it. On p. 7 ("H1 Ranging UT/DT Bias Trade Types") it definitely says D1 TMA is > 0 and < 0.4. He only uses 0.8 for entries for his H4 Trend "A" trades, and for placing additional orders on most entries.
