It's explained in the MT4i documentation.
By default the trade copier does not send pending orders. It only sends a message to the receiver
once a pending order is filled and turns into a buy or sell order.
Copying pending orders is potentially very dangerous. Let's say that you are trading the breakout of yesterday's range, and you have a buy-stop at yesterday's high. This could get triggered on the
receiver without being triggered on the sender, because of slight price differences between the two accounts. If the price then retraces, the sending copy of Empty4 will be unaware that the receiver has a trade which needs to be managed, but the receiver will have an ever-increasing loss and will not be receiving any instructions to close the position.
The issue with it not closing the trades is probably because it knew it didn't open them, so it was behaving nicely, and only would have closed the trade if it knew it had opened them.
So, pending trades get copied when they open. Trades in progress, when you start the trade copier for the first time, you should just let slide, and catch the next ones that open.

I think MT4i and others have FREE utilities to cope with those kinds of problems either by automating reconnects and such or various kinds of warnings (email SMS etc)
