Hi there. You're right it is a difficult question with no right or wrong answer, the setups are on all of them. I suppose it depends what you're after, if you want pairs that behave similarly to EU then stick to the more major dollar pairs but if you want something to open your eyes to more extreme behaviours try the yens or better still I enjoy GBPNZD and in particular getting battered by GBPSEK; 1000 pip moves in a day are fairly common. To clarify my earlier post... I suppose I meant it in terms of when you actually execute trades - live trades over 10 pairs or so is pretty intense to manage as a newcomer, particularly if you trade without a stop loss. By all means if you have unlimited time search for the setups on as many pairs as you wish, the more the better..... chart time is Gooooood!! You will learn there are subtle differences between the pairs and the way they behave. When I started I found it was taking me so long to research on different time frames to find the really good setups I was happy with, that I only had time to search a few per day, and then if I wasn't quite sure which level I was at or whether it was a valid M or W I would either just have a go with a tight stop or just watch it from the sidelines. As your experience grows and the more chart time you put in, you're speed will drastically improve and spotting an opportunity with this style of trading seems to take less time than most other methods I've tried. Another point, whilst it is good to be selective in your trades, try not to get too hung up over levels and setups. There is often lots of discussion and debate on here about which level the currency is on and whether folk think its going up or down which is all good, particularly if it helps people learn, but remember that this is not a rules based method, it is not a 'system'. This is a subjective trading methodology and to that end everyone will interpret things differently - you need to master how YOU interpret the levels and how YOUR interpretations work for you. Don't be afraid to get it wrong, just kill your losers quickly and learn if your reading of the setup was valid or not.... Then move on to the next! Hope this helps a tad. Good luck and enjoy the ride! Fly |

Tried yesterday the LFH strategy tester, something similar to Amibroker's. Note that there is a pause function explained in the pdf manual thus no need to Stop & Start, rather Pause & Play. Orders can be placed as market or pendings. However, pending sell can't be above price and pending Buy cant be below price. If attempted that way, it's executed as market order. The need for monitoring pairs, i had an idea. Can't we have threads that deal with pair sets, eg - top four majors's - EU,GU,UF & UJ - Commodity pairs - AU, NU, UC - Exoicts - Intrest rate differential triads - Etc. Here's a very recent article from Bloomberg heading - Humans beat robots in currency bets @ http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-07-2 ... ncies.html Kwan, thanks for the Q. Long UJ coz' Pin in H4 at earlier accumulation zone. One trade already book small profit, pending behind it got executed thus created one more position. Since still a NB, didn't want to make too many jumps as that would loose track. Once i'm out of trade, will reset bias and focus. Cheers, |

Max, Thats what i don't understand, in all TF, yen pairs are going down, so i have no idea why you are entering longs.. Except maybe in H1, where you might count current situation as L3 and potential W formation.. but even then your entry is kinda early.. Not sure if separate topics for each pair sets is ideal, CJ mentioned that other FT may use that as a form of signal service, but i guess u guys can go ahead if u want.. If its all about learning, i believe a single thread should suffice. The patterns appear in all the charts, but for starters just stick to one or 2 like what many others have mentioned, maybe since everyone's having fun with audusd, use that as the base and perhaps gbpjpy, eurjpy or some other pair which is completely uncorrelated I firmly believe in playing pairs that you know well, there is no need to go and play all 25pairs, just stick to a few for starters. Most of you would have tried 10.x, i'm not sure how many of you were able to handle the sheer number of pairs and trades. I couldnt juggle everything and it became a terrible pain. Instead i found it better to just concentrate on the 3 most popular pairs EU, GU and UC, with the occasional obvious trades that appear in the other pairs. For EU, GU and UC i trade w/o SL for the higher TF trends, and i WILL add in positions when i'm in DD as long as the higher TF trend is still being enforced. Of course these positions are added when it PA is moving back to the main trend and not away from it. If i'm doing CT or for those pairs i'm not familiar with, SL is a MUST, and i will trade smaller lots as well. I believe its similar to Bob's document previously where he ranked each of the pairs and their characteristics. Once he knew how those pairs move its easier for him to trade them and manage his expectations. One example is GBPUSD vs GBPNZD. GBPUSD has a typical ADR of about 50 to 100pips. GBPNZD has a typical ADR of 100 to 200pips. Knowing this, i will trade HALF the lot size for GBPNZD vs GBPUSD. Also it might be good to stick to just one TF and play that out, dumping a H4 or H1 analysis on a M15 can sometimes lead to MAJOR DD and you start wondering "what the h***". Of course confluence is good stuff, when ALL TF are in confluence it means you are pretty much covered and should have no problem leaving the trade as is for a while Lastly even though you are earning green pips, one thing i always do AFTER i close my trades is to mark out my closing area and my target TP zone, and THEN see what PA does after that. It helps me to see what i have missed or got right? e.g i closed at the first push instead of the 3rd push, or i closed nicely at the peak. This really helped me with the chart vision and improved my sixth sense. |

I think this is a really good point. I've been re-reading CJ's posts from the beginning again, and if you were "weighting" his emphasis and approach the large majority is about trading the pins and how he does that. Yes of course we need to understand market cycles, levels, etc, but I believe there can be a subtle distraction here if not careful, because the fox mixes it up so much it's easy to get confused or lost in the tracks - sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees! Trading the pins at the bottom or top of a move (including W/M) is all I'm focussing on for now, and in particularly where those pins form in accummulation areas like previous support/resistance etc because that's where the fox is going to get his next victims from. |

Hey Pips400 - your first attempt at this was brilliant, in my view. Yes - it did reveal some vulnerabilities ... but look at your results. I have highlighted in red the reason for your success ... take a bow. I'm hoping to get to this stage in the coming week. Question: How many losses did you expect to take before you got one win? Question: Did you end up in profit through operating according to the guidelines? (Rhetorical) Question: Are you going to improve from here (Of course you will) The rest of your post I will try to address next. Ivan |

Excellent post Kwann! Very instructive, especially on the issue of stops and adding trades when in DD. Trades differ widely one from the other for several reasons which include Quality of Entry, Higher TF Trends, General State of the Market etc. etc. It is good for one to take all these into consideration in setting a stop loss, if at all. There are several occasions when I have carried significant DD, but closed the final trade having earned in the region of about 3 to 4 times what I would have made had the trade proceeded straight to TP in the first place. This definitely comes with the disadvantage that you remain tied to the pair in question and would have perhaps preferred to trade some other pair instead; but then, if you are in it, you are in it, and you might as well just make the best of it. This is not, by any means, to say that you can just open a trade with a shoddy if not ridiculous entry and then sit back hoping that, one fine day, it will go into profit! It's really a question of balancing all operating forces as wisely as one can manage. Perhaps much of this hinges primarily on the issue of trade monitoring. If you are not in a position to closely monitor your trades and cannot afford protracted screen sessions, then maybe you are better off with strict stop loss rules across the board. But you had also better have the honed and highly perfected skills of CJ, otherwise you will surely have course to mourn more frequently than you'd like. The bottom line to all of this is practice, practice and more practice. No child learns to walk without taking a tumble over and over again. And then comes one day when they have learned all that the previous tumbles had to teach, and they begin to walk in safety. When your stop gets hit, just take it as part of the learning curve; but be sure to look closely to see if there isn't something there for you to learn. |

I think this is a great practice Kwann, but it must be laborious marking out TPs for each trade. Is there a tool you use to make this easier? |

You have 2 choices ... 1) Use a SL 2) Don't use a SL It's always going to be tough when beginning a new strategy. But as CJ says ... keep your stops tight, and a few pips above the highest pin. Getting stopped out is then not too bad at all, unless you are over leveraged. You should NOT be feeling anxious if you get stopped out - if you do, try dropping the position size a bit. I can say this from experience ... I used to be in such a hurry to get my trading working properly, that I constantly bit off more than I could chew, leading to losses far in excess of what they should have been for an account of the size I was trading. That's how I know this. If you get stopped out, and the trade runs in your direction again ... jump right back in, provided all the reasons for entry still exist. Easy to say - particularly just after you have taken a loss on it, but I think that is one thing you can do. I think you have used the word subconsciously here - what we'd call a "Freudian Slip" ... "complicate" ... why complicate the process? It uses up valuable mental energy, and makes you more anxious than you need to be. I think you'd agree that it is better to take the loss and look for the next opportunity? Your results sheet tells me this is right. Don't chase losses ... well not until you are very confident. That would be my view, after reading of your experience. Xrismak explained that he did this only to see what would happen over time. I think he said it was not a part of his current trading - it was just there as an unrelated experiment, and not as a recommendation. Don't be too hard on yourself, Pips400 - you did very well, and because you have recognised the issue with DD, I think you get an extra star for that effort. You're on your way. Please do not see my words as having "expert" value - far from it. I have written this way to try to encourage you, and to show you that you do indeed have a good grasp on this. Keep your balance ... you are almost there. Ivan |

Kwan & Pedigree, thanks for the posts. I understand what each is saying. As in the case of yen, once i got in, i did " balancing all operating forces as wisely as one can manage." That is to say i kept to my level of confidence and belief and wanted to see if i was wronged out as it's still early days and i wanted to learn to build instinct in this. Just a glance and one could see UJ is short on many TF's, nothing to learn much here. But if i take the other side and that too on a live a/c and with micor lots, there is so much learning that can happen if i stay focused and confident and take sl's with grace if they come. This is what i did. With my first trade for UJ long on Thursday late, the first trade was market order. Once i was in, immediately i put a pend order below and gave the sl's then and there. The sl was not visiable in my first UJ trade pic but it was there. after booking the first at profit for 25 odd pips, i let it ride lower as there was buffer i had created through the small profit. The second one when it executed and still went lower, i put another pend trade with same SL. All in all, it is a training exerciser to build confidence that anything else. Lot of insight gained. Nice to see members pointing out the dangerous and the obvious. Cheers All, |
