Post subject:  Basket Trading BALUDA'S CSS Crossovers
With the expected drawdown building since Friday I was wondering which set if any would close first and now I have it.. M5H1D1 leaps further ahead and profit has stayed above drawdown for this set which is awesome since the average across all 4 sets paints a very different picture.

I thought it would take a decent spike later once the election results hit but M5H1D1 has got there already and can now build another set ready for the fun later..

This set is looking nice and robust :cheer:

Myfxbook shows a different picture unfortunately. Seems perhaps the volatility around the US elections caused StopOuts at the broker...? I did get numerous messages from brokers stating they reduced the margins during the election period. My account still moving along fine, worth mentioning I turned off all trading since Monday.

Yes.. 4 set files on the one account was obviously a bit much so that's the end of that test. M5H1D1 was clearly the winner up to that point though so that was the information I was looking for. Did anyone have a set file running all the way through on demo that did survive?

I went into the weekend with a basket still open and the huge gapping on Monday morning put this account under strain. Its a $7 k account and at one stage the draw down was at -$2500. However it closed this morning when it became obvious the US elections weren't going as expected (Thanks Donald :D ). There are 2 new trades open. Set file is the H1D1GTF. The only change I made from the original is I changed the basket TP to 1.5%. This week is the acid test for me to see if I'm going to go live with this EA (with a $7k) account with this set file and so far its passing with flying colours. In 8 days of trading it has closed 16 baskets....an average of 2.5 per day. My only concern is that the basket sizes are not always 1.5% of the balance? Here are the basket sizes from day 1 till this morning.

1) $40.32 original basket TP of .5%
2) $36.36
3) $81.43 (I changed to 1.5% TP)
4) $75.23
5) $122.28
6) $114.84
7) $124.79
8) $128.93
9) $126.99
10) $120.55
11) $137.96
12) $120.07
13) $147.70
14) $118.27
15) $139.97
16) $106.67 (is this lower basket possibly due to the volatility at 04h00 this morning as the election results started coming out?)

Only 8 trading days is still early days but I ran these results through a spreadsheet. If EA is closing 2.5 baskets per day then in a 20 day trading month there will be 50 baskets. If I have a compounding growth of 1.5% of balance per basket then by today the account should have been on %8580.03--its currently on $8941.30 (that wasn't a complaint) :smile:
After a 20 trading days month it will be on $14234 (growth of 103%). Max Draw down 27% which is on the high side but bearable.

I will definitely look at putting in a time filter so no new baskets open after 12h00 on a Friday (or not at all).
Any other ideas to make this EA even more robust will be welcome.

These results are awesome. I am setting up a new test for this version of H1D1 vs M5H1D1 and also H4W1 vs M15H4W1. It will be good to know whether the 3rd timeframe actually makes any difference or not and once that is settled I also want to look at the range of diff and delta values for the lower timeframe trigger.

Hello TJF,

A couple of questions regarding your trading style.

I understand most of your setfiles use a MaxTradesPerSymbol=3. If so, can you please explain how would you handle a situation in which the 3 trades for X symbols are entered and then these trades go into very negative territory or start to stall for long periods of time? (As your SL of -100%, it's either this or TP%)

My point is if you are in negative territory but most of your "available baskets" are already entered (and no more significant room for entries that could pull you out of the drawdown), what do you do?

In particular, my solution to this was just to have no MaxTradesPerSymbol, so my demos are in "$10-12 Take Profit OR Crash and Burn with a $200 SL mode" (0.01 lots), and either of them will be hit eventually with the unlimited entries I'm allowing as long as there are valid signals.

I hope you see this as a valid question

Hi Diego,

I use max trades 3 as my line in the sand because otherwise i would run out of margin too quickly with the small account size i trade. So far here with the exception of the USA election results I have not seen any set i have posted fail to close because of this restriction.

I prefer a limit on the number of trades to a stop loss and if a basket was getting into trouble on my live account I would add some manual trades from tested support/resistance in the higher timeframe direction to get it closed. Sometimes with previous basket strategies on a live account I have had to turn off the EA then hedge trades on all but one pair at a time and just work on getting one pair to break even.. then move onto the next one etc... it can take a while but i have recovered some accounts from horrendous drawdown.. i have also lost others...

If you are trading a (much) bigger account then i agree lifting this restriction could ensure all baskets should eventually close on their own but can you afford to risk 5k+ to find out? I can't. Of course a cent account is another option but they bring their own problems once you start winning.

I feel safer risking 100% of a small account to a lesser % of a large account so this is just me.

If you used the M5H1D1 set I posted or the H1D1 set that Pooler posted as a reference and then test unlimited trades against that in the way you describe with a basket SL then that would be a really interesting comparisson...
