And re Bob`s trading, he mentioned more than few times that sometimes his trading is not exactly by the book (the JPY selling is another well known story), If I had his EXPERIENCE I would do the same. I don't have it ergo I am following rules that are designed to protect.
If you trade by the rules you will make money. But those rules came out of years of hard learned experience.
90% of the time I am trading by those rules. However, every several years a Macro-economic trend happens. I used to get killed by these things, The guy I really learned Forex trading from (Peter Bain) was a pivot/trendline indicator guy. He was always bullish USD. Well, during the Bush administration it was sell the dollar. Just look at a monthly chart and you will see what I mean. Because of that I gave up on his system but his teachings were part of me and a lot of 10.4. trendline is the 240 line and I use weekly pivots instead of daily pivots. That is where that stuff came from. The one thing I did not learn from him and took me years and years to learn was knowing macro-economics. I had to learn currency exchange and how they interact in business when I started a school here in China. When I figure tuition I have to figure the exchange rates or i can lose a lot of money quickly.

Then OCT. 2008 hit and I learned about my first Macro-economic event. I finally began to understand that Forex is driven by what happens out there. Once again I lost money but i also saw there were people out there who knew this was coming and the made millions/billions on the market. Was this some big secret?? I finally figured out that the Forex writers were full of ..................... sorry Steve. They didnt know and were wrong way too much. But it bugged me how the big guys knew. The first thing I threw out were the conspiracy guys. I was lucky enough to come across John Maudin and I entered the world of economic investors who trade by Macro-fundamentals. For the first time I began to understand what drives the markets. The USD 8 year Bush drop was no surprise to them. OCT. 2008 and its aftermath they nailed that one too. They were really close on what was going to happen next. It is no big mystery or secret. You have to understand the difference between a macro economic issue and the regular day by day stuff. Well way before it ever hit the news he began to talk about the fundamentally flawed Euro as it stood. (This was back when people were predicting the Euro was the next world currency and would replace the dollar.) There was no way that was gong to happen in fact he stated that over the next 5 years the Euro would hit a crossroads and would be in danger of disintegrating if certain structural problems were not dealt with. I said OK. Boy did I get mocked over at FF when I repeated the Euro would not replace the dollar. But it happened. 2011 came, Greece hit the news just as John predicted and the Euro dropped like a rock. I did make money but I missed most of the move because the big boys would scare me off like JPY is scaring many of you off now. He walked me through that whole thing (He is not even a Forex trader but will invest in currencies from time to time). When that one finished up in fact before that one was finished he began to lay out the problem of Japan. He called a bug looking for a windshield. When Abe became the front runner last fall and won, I was ready to listen to this guy and many others like him. JPY is going to depreciate and the big boys know it. However, they need buyers, so they can sell. And they got a bunch on the hook right now. Yeah Dragon Head caught me by surprise last week but I trade in such a way that no one can blow me out of my account anymore.

For some of you this is your first experience in seeing a Macro fundamental move. Learn all you can because next time you will know enough to retire. Watch how the big boys maneuver the market for a big kill when everyone is going one way. Then watch them maneuver the market to get everyone going the wrong way so they can clean up again. They needed buyers so they could sell, well they have plenty of people buying the JPY now. There is one thing the big boys cant do though. They cant change the Macro fundamental that is moving the market long term. For us that is the 240 line the vast majority of time but in this case, they want the JPY move all to themselves. Well sorry big boys I am riding with you on this one until the macro fundamental changes I am into each wave.

I wouldn't go long with xxxjpy until UJ break it's 240 line. If it fail all xxxjpy will go down.
You can wait if you want to.
So far today I have pocketed
EJ +92
CJ +135
AJ +35
UJ +63
CJ +78
GJ +43

Total +446

And I have more profitable trades going on with them now.
The Master. I know that you are very good trader so it doesn't suprise me. Anyway... you have SAID it yourself.

Main 10.4/10.5 rule - BUY above 240, SELL below 240. None of above gains were made with 240 rule... all were made against it.

We all know that you are very good teacher/trader and you are able to make great amount of pips/money. But hey... these trades were still agianst rules ;)
If you have the choice;
A. Trade ''against the rules'' and make money
B. Trade ''with the rules'' and loose money or stand aside

What choice would you make?

I made a few bad decisions last week, my signature will show for that. I know now where I went wrong, and will trade ''against the rules'' again if I see fit.
.
Hi Gertje,

Where do you think you went wrong?

Hi Gertje,

Where do you think you went wrong?
Easy; over-exposure to the JPY.

At one point I had 50 trades buying against the JPY. That's 0.5 lots on a $2.500 account.
Great when the plan fits, but not so great when the plan falls apart.

Then I made the decision to stay in the GBPJPY and EURJPY trades when both pairs were at BE. Would I have closed, the DD on the remaining pairs was not enough to MC the account.

Finally I decided to keep my profits from last week by not closing everything out when I had the chance. Instead of just my winnings, I now lost 85% of the deposit.

JPY pairs under 240...

240 4H is a great tool to catch trends in medium term, but if you have great confidence in fundamentals (as it happens to JPY pairs now) perhaps you must use a long term approach with 200 sma daily which is the most used for hedge funds, etc. You can see that even AUDJPY achieved (for few pips) to close above 200 sma daily. So, we are yet in a uptrend...

I added a 1200 sma in 4h (=200 daily) just to have a visual reference of the big dogs area. You can´t use it to set SL because sometimes the distance is huge, but it helps to manage panic.

240 comes from 2 lwm monthly, but the most used in Wall Street is 7 sma monthly which gives 1440 sma in 4h, very close to 1200 coming from 200 daily. In fact, 1200 or 1440 are the same thing, you can´t notice the difference.

These long term moving averages are too wide for intraday or even weekly trading. They should used only for core trading and I just have no patience to wait several months to close a trade. In any case, it worths it a look. Someone said 200 sma daily was a self-fullfiling prophecy just because everybody takes it in consideration.

The SL is set for all orders? How have you decided to put it there?

Here the one technique that will save you from getting your account wiped out. Always take the BE trade especially if you are over trading. Starting a 0 is always my goal. In other words every trade get back to 0 or make a profit. You had it and still would have been set up for a good move. I cant tell you how many times I just start over if I have too many trades or levels going. I was sitting good on all pairs last week except cad/jpy. I closed some of them out when I hit 20% DD because that is my rule. 20% DD and no more. I had a losing week last week but I also kept my account and now my DD about 4%. You learn that one last technique and practice it you wont lose an account again. Even if you are confident of the trades I still draw that line at 20%. The only reason I hit 20% is because I am over trading anyway so I need to close out trades. Follow that rule religiously or even 10% and you start reducing your DD. Believe me learn that rule and you will become long term profitable consistantly.

Then a new thing will dawn on you. I aint waitin for 20% DD because the means I am going to lose money so you really get picky about what trades to let run. Dragon Head caught me last week but I followed my rules even though today I could have broken even on all those cad/jpy trades. But it doesnt matter. You need to discipline yourself to close losing trades. Believe me you will fell so much better the next week like I am now with my full trading arsenal ready to go. I didnt hold on, I closed some losers out, had a losing week but my account is at full strength and ready to go. I picked back up 6% last Friday and almost another 2% today so whatever losses I took were made up quickly.

It took guts to come on here and share your pain and lessons. Traders learn more from losing than they do winning anyway. Traders need to know I lost money last week but I cut them off and will recover them this week. I got caught in April too but recovered all my losses the first week of May. That is how it works.

That line is from a trade way up. I have the script set at 200 pips and then i readjust them. xxx.jpy trades I basically keep the SL out of sight and go to a daily chart to set them. All other trades of mine will be around the 240 line.

Yes I agree with you.

USDJPY may find strong resistance at 99.64, being 61.8 on Fib grid 1 on a weekly chart.

Hi Gertjan,

My commiserations. As I recall, you were doing fantastically well trading 10.4 the Gertze way until this yen thingy.

You don't have to take excessive risks, just trade the way you used to do, making thousands of pips in a day/a week. Leave the risk taking for the others. JUST KEEP DOING WHAT YOU ARE BEST AT.
