My demo expired last week, so.... After manually calculating in the trades that were still open when the demo expired & at the end of the trading week, the results for the 30 days are + 2573 pips (approx 8%) with 0.01 lots of EURGBP open and SL at +50 and 0.03 lots of AUDNZD open and currently down and likely to be closed at the start of trading tomorrow due to a stoch cross. My goal is to achieve a conservative 5% increase per month, so very happy with the results for Sept. I have started a new demo and will post a link to myfxbook once markets open again tomorrow morning. Also, I have put the EA on my live account last week, but it hasn't taken any trades...not sure why and as mentioned in the post above to Gary, Steve will be re-coding the EA with flexible options so we can expand the testing parameters. Here's to everyone having a good week trading |

OK, so that's interesting Snowy, are you using my setfile and the EA downloaded in post 1? |

Ah. I thought the results you'd been posting were from your manual trading, not the EA. Lousy. That's why I haven't been pursuing this any harder. Results from the last 12 months: AUDCAD: -$758 AUDCHF: -$121 AUDJPY: +$201 AUDUSD: +$126 CADCHF: +$1727 CADJPY: -$1436 CHFJPY: -$444 EURAUD: +$913 EURCAD: +$2565 EURGBP: +$1453 EURJPY: -$695 EURUSD: -$1212 GBPAUD: +$927 GBPCAD: +$457 GBPCHF: +$2322 GBPJPY: +$168 GBPUSD: -$658 USDCAD: -$1352 USDCHF: +$782 USDJPY: +999 That's trading 0.1 lot, so $1 is roughly 1 pip. So trading 20 non-NZD pairs (omitting EURCHF), it got a whopping $500 per month. And that sounds better than it actually was. This is what the whole portfolio looks like for the last year+: So it made about 750 3-lot trades, and most of the year it went sideways. And this test didn't include spread, commissions, etc -- include those and it would look a lot worse. With the results you've been reporting (+2573 pips in 30 days!) I decided I needed to look closer. But if you look at the equity curve, you'll see there was a $3000 run-up since early September. It may be that my test is reasonably accurate, and the last 30 days were just unusually good. This is why I don't trust short forward tests. I want to see how the system performs over the long term. If my test is accurate, this isn't a system I'd want to trade. You've been trading Gday (manually and EA) a lot longer than 30 days. What kind of results have you been seeing? Is the 2500 pips in the last month typical, or unusual? It may be possible to make this work by cherry-picking the pairs you trade. (And you may be doing that already.) Some of them worked a whole lot better than others -- e.g. the CHF pairs seem to do fairly well for some strange reason. That's especially puzzling since the CHF peg means CHF is basically a mirror of EUR, and the CHF pairs look a lot better than the equivalent EUR pairs. (!?) When I tried this pair-selection filter before, it didn't work all that well -- the "pairs that work" didn't seem very stable. I'd select the best pairs from one period and walk it forward into another period, and those pairs would stink in the new period. But I'll take another look at it. I'll run it on 2011, pick the pairs with the best Sharpe ratio (so pairs with big up-and-down swings don't get picked just because they happened to end on an up swing) and see how those pairs perform in 2012. Will let you know what I find. |

I'm back. Did you miss me?? Well, that's interesting. The basic Gday strategy kicked tail in 2011. Here's the result of trading all 20 symbols in 2011: Awesome, right? Let's bet the farm!! But 2012 doesn't look so good: I have no idea why 2011 looked so great and then 2012 suddenly died, literally overnight. So does it help if we select the strongest pairs from 2011, and only trade those in 2012? Unfortunately no. Here's the result of trading in 2012, only using the pairs with 2011 Sharpe > 1.0: That's worse than not selecting pairs at all. The trouble is, what works in one year doesn't seem to predict very well what works the next year. Here's a table of 2011 and 2011 results, showing profit and Sharpe ratio. I sorted it by descending 2011 Sharpe. Notice the 2012 Sharpe doesn't match the 2011 Sharpe very well, and similar for 2011/2012 profits. In fact if I look at the mathematical correlation between the 2011 Sharpe and 2012 Sharpe, it's -0.31. +1.0 means it's totally correlated -- for example 2012Sharpe = 0.7*2011Sharpe would be 100% correlated. If the 2011 Sharpe is positive, you know the 2012 Sharpe will be positive too. -1.0 means it's totally anti-correlated, like 2012Sharpe = -0.7*2011Sharpe. 0.0 means it's totally UNcorrelated, so 2011 Sharpe has NO relationship to 2012 Sharpe. -0.31 means it's not very correlated, and what correlation there is, is backwards. A good result in 2011 is more likely to produce a bad result in 2012. That's why trading only the strongest 2011 pairs was worse than trading all pairs. BTW here is the result of trading all 20 pairs from 1/1/08 through today: You can see the results have been very inconsistent. 2008 stunk, 2009-2010 were modestly OK. 2011 was spectacular but it was an exception. 2012 (until the last month or so) has been lousy. So: with the rules I have here, I would not consider this tradeable. The EA might be doing something different and might be more profitable and (more importantly) more stable. I might experiment with some changes -- e.g. make the stops volatility-based instead of fixed pips. Unfortunately due to Tradestation's limitations, it's really tough to test and optimize a portfolio-trading system like this. Each run is an extended process that takes 10 minutes or so, with a bunch of manual steps to combine the results in Excel. So my abilities to optimize this will be limited. |

attached my setfile and the ea. @gary: interesting results! by the way: is there any reason for not testing/trading nzd-pairs? |

I don't generally trade NZD pairs in shorter-term systems because the spreads are often bad and fills can be terrible. I just didn't think to include them in this test. I'd want a clearly VERY profitable system, with large average trade size, before I'd add NZD into the mix. |
