Little to nothing. The ATR set at 60MA, The COG, and TMA are all about the same thing. Different indis, different math, same results. You have to remember one thing about indis. Any indi that moves with price action, whether it uses lines, boxes, histograms, etc. etc. are nothing more than moving averages with different math formulas applied to them. If you take any moving indi and adjust the numbers you can make them look and work like other indis. RSI, STO, MACD, Laguirre, Awesome, plus a 1000 others are just variations of a theme. |

That will normally be true but may not be true in all cases. The D2.1 and W2.1 could flip on a reversal before they return to DO or WO. You just havent seen it yet because since the release of 10.7 we have had almost exclusively ranging markets. You will notice this more in strong trending markets. |

I just want everyone to understand that point because there will be some differences between the Opens and the 2.1 STOs in strong trending markets when they reverse. They are meant to be sensitive and to warn you quickly of changes in the market. Especially the D2.1 so you will close out a trade if you have a profit or price is going the wrong way it will warn you. |

That is what the 2 is for. When you use a 3 MA it is getting the math of the last 3 candles. The STO uses the math of the 2MA and then its math formula. The STO is more sensitive to price movement than most indis are. It reacts quickly. That is why I use the STO7 and some are using STO14.We used to use the RSI 2 but I liked the STO better. The old RSI 2 could do about the same thing as the STO 7. They are approximately the same setting. |

Hi Bob, thanks for explaining. I read that at an other place from you. And I understand that. My question again has the reason, that Gertje sad, he trades from one line to the opposite of TMA Channel and I am looked at this Idea. So I tested the channels close with the Stoch Lines. See picture above. |

Trading from top to bottom or bottom to top works best in ranging markets, which is most of the time. However, it does not work in strong trending markets. So it is a good strategy this year since the markets have basically trended most of the year and trends have been short and sweet. |

Can we use the 10.7/10.9 STO for back testing? Im running into an issue where the lines are changing on me. I took a screen shot last night when i put in a limit order, checked the charts today and the red and yellow lines had moved. First example is the A/U here is a shot last night 6/19 Here is a shot almost 24 hours later 6/20 The red line looks like it crossed at the start of the week on the last shot. When i first looked at the chart it was still on top aka the first picture. Same thing with the A/J except with the yellow line.... 6.19 6.20 Is this the way its suppose to be? If so, i guess i should stop trying to manually back test this. Thanks for any help you can give. |

The 2.1.1 weekly and daily line can change from 0 to 100 depending on price as you are looking to the actual open daily or weekly candle depending if price is higher/lower as the last closed D/W price... Cheers Tommaso |

I guess this has me all kinds of confused. How exactly does the STO indicator work? Bob has said it has nothing to do with the daily/weekly open. When exactly will the daily/weekly STO indicator switch sides? How does it relate to the last 2 candles as Bob mentioned? Is this just an example of a ranging market, and you can expect that it flip flop around even this late in the trading week? Its above the 60/240 on the H4 which is defined as an uptrend..... Sorry for all the questions, im just trying to learn. Just kinda frustrated as i thought i understood what i was reading and then comes this monkey wrench.... Back to page 1 for me and start re-reading all of this.....ive obviously missed something important.... |

The last two candles are related to the open, that why a 2.1.1 stoch works indeed like this you can try to look at the formula: The idea behind the stoch indi is that prices tend to close near the extremes of the recent range before turning points. The Stochastic oscillator is calculated: Where:Price is the last closing price LOW_N(Price) is the lowest price over the last N periods HIGH_N(Price) is the highest price over the last N periods %D is a 3-period simple moving average of %K, SMA_3(%K). %D-Slow is a 3-period simple moving average of %D, SMA_3(%D).
