| Post subject: | Serious Equipment / Processes for ...serious traders |
Hi all, wanted to start a topic and get input on the supporting technology and services required to run successful trading auto, semi auto and discretionary - culminating in an agreed statement of Good Practice.... Anyway what I would like to address is : 1- VPS providers, 2-Desk top/ home platform, 3 Remote access, 4 UPS Uninterrupted Supply Note I have no direct or indirect associations with equip. or service providers I will put my own experience and views and expect these to be challenged and refined. It is a common view that to be successful in trading it needs to be treated as a business - take it serious, research the market, research how others are addressing the market, measure performance especially profitability and DD, track processes that improve performance, apply discipline, have a plan and risk manage.....as Bob would put it trade in a way to trade another day. I have not addressed internet providers since these are more national and reliability, cost and service stats should be available in each country. I have 2 providers again have you ever been let down by one provider with the response we will be with you in 3 days. OK depending on where you live 3g or 4g maybe an option through your phone. The broker issue has been thrashed around and it still remains a massive point of contention although with GP it is clearer.. lets put that in the parking lot for now as far as reliability and risk management As we focus on the core of our business some of these peripheral elements may get forgotten ...until Remember you are only as strong as your weakest link...and disasters do happen. So lets get started Uninterrupted Power Supply UPS Having spent some time in the energy sector recently one thing that is on the cards for the future is Power Interruption in many countries / regions around the world. Get a UPS that protects you for 5-10 minutes on any PC running continuous EAs. Statistically most power outs here last for less than 2 minutes. Note the modem, router, switch must also be powered. In addition, many of the UPS can send alert to you ...giving the potential to unwind positions. Estimate $75-$150 for peace of mind 2. Desktop...always on and VPS I have the ability to have a dedicated trading computer i7 3.4ghz 8gb with nothing else on but trading progs. and with a 24hr service contract for 3 yrs. In the past I have run discretionary on this machine plus 1hr, 4hr and daily EAs and have taken the view that faster EAs are more susceptible to latency (delay between execution by computer and execution by broker) and require VPS. I use CNS with my VPS in NY used to be in Sydney but latency lower in NY. One issue I have had is accessing the CNS VPS from multiple computers can resulted in multiple instances and duplicate trades ....that was fun...NOT ....Note broker time remains broker time not where your VPS is. Make sure if you have the desktop option that you switch bill gates constant updates off if you are running EAs on your desktop ...that can really screw up overnight positions if your pc reboots! What are the experiences of the group on VPS providers or desktop? 3. Remote access when away What systems are people using to access their main trading platform when operating away from home/office? I am using logmein free. Works well on laptop .. not great on windows phone ok on ipad. I find it easier to run all through desktop in home office - especially after experience of duplicate trades! 4. Other risk management tools / issues - simple equity protection EAs that switch off everything if drop below x - I know most if not all of Steve's EA's have built in "keep your shirt" settings - use them. - spread equity across 3 brokers - do it for risk management but also take opportunity to measure respective performance and if one or other significantly worse than the other 2 (same EAs) then find another ! - question to the group - We often use stealth settings that hide SLs from brokers for good reason - does this put us at risk from ever having to prove to broker with logfile that there was a SL in place if disaster strikes ? What other protection / risk management tools, processes and systems do others recommend? Doing the above to allow us to concentrate on the core of our business ...and of course sleep at night Jonathan |

Good post. I'd ditch the logmein for TeamViewer as logmein is a joke! Especially on smartphones as you alluded to. Get the TeamViewer, you'll be glad you did. Peace, SatchFan |

Thanks this is the type of feedback that saves hours of trawling testing and taking focus away from trading Cheers Jonathan |

In addition to knowing FX i work in IT so i know lots on systems management and information security. 1. I would never run live 24/5 EAs from home. I prefer CNS VPS too for number of reasons. Get your VPS in a datacenter nearest your broker for best execution. 2. Yes before Windows 2008 server you had to make sure you connect to the console port with the RDP shortcut (mstsc /admin or edit the rdp file and add the commands for console connecting) or you'd run multiple instances of your Empty4 platform causing dupe orders. CNS has had a nice utility to warn of this for a while now. When you first get your VPS make sure you set Windows updates to apply Friday evening and you'll be good. 3. I prefer built in RDP for remote access. It's reliable, fast, and one less additional program you have to keep updated separately for security. 4. I use MT4i.com's Account Monitor program and set Equity and Margin alerts so that i know if something goes over a threshold while i'm not watching the screen (e.g. sleeping). http://www.mt4i.com/appstore/app.aspx?i ... popularity By the way in case anyone is interested i wrote a list of security tips to consider for your VPS here. I take security very seriously > http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 95&p=50793 |

Thanks for the tips yes I would recommend mt4i and have used consistently for 2 years 1. consolidates results even across accounts providing excellents stats 2. provides alerts DD 3. Is efficient in not eating up memory compared to other EAs result consolidators 4. I have also had good experience with support when I had an issue comments on avoiding duplication on VPS orders valuable. put on one tab on your Empty4 on a pair you will never use and in props colour the background bright pink so you will not close down by mistake! "never run an ea 24/5 from home" - in general yes I agree. The reason traders/forum members would start from home is that sense of "control" and also keeping the fixed costs down of their trading. So to be clear what would you recommend as the steps towards IT security if one was trading from home potentially with semi auto EAs ? Final point excellent security ref./post for VPS - I have also been told to shut down Empty4 on my VPS each weekend to avoid memory problems - what is your view on this? Jonathan |
