Like most non-coders here I envy those of you who have mastered coding for Empty4.

I suspect like the majority I would love to learn how to code.

So the question is, Is there any coder who has the time to put together a training program on a modular basis and post to the forum so that the dummies amongst us can learn this noble art?

Anyone tried the book "Expert Advisor Programming: Creating Automated Trading Systems in MQL for Empty4 4" By Andrew R Young? I heard good things about it, but can't find it anywhere to take a look.

AK, you get get it at Amazon for about $34 shipped. The official site at http://www.expertadvisorbook.com/ has it for $30 (not sure about shipping), or $25 for an e-book.

Don't know if it's any good. Has anyone seen it?

Thanks man. $25 sounds fair enough if the book is any good. So anyone tried it? Amazon reviews looks good.

I notice the most negative Amazon review says the book doesn't provide much more detail than the built-in dictionary in the editor. If so, that would be fairly useless to me. What I really need is an explanation of HOW the language works, and HOW to use it safely. I.e. how and when Empty4 calls your start() function (I know it sometimes backfills but I don't know when/why), how to write indicators that calculate historic values and update in realtime properly, how to handle important EA cases like "what to do if your order entry failed" or "how to manage existing orders if your Empty4 crashes and you have to restart," things like that.

For stuff like that, I suspect a careful reading of some of Steve and George's code is probably a lot more valuable than a review of MQL syntax and functions.

You can find and download all the source code from the book (for free, with corrections and page references) at the book's ebook page along with the table of contents and 1st chapter as an excerpt.

I have been looking into getting this book too. Might still. Just having a book/documentation NOT translated from Russian would be helpfull. :lol:

IMHO walk-forward analysis is **CRUCIAL** for proper system testing. $20 for a walk-forward tester is DIRT CHEAP.

Except it relies on Empty4's Strategy Tester, and we all know the problems that has. Given that I don't trust ST any farther than I can throw it, I don't know that it's worth getting a WFA tester that's based on ST.

That is what I concluded as well. What good is a WFA on faulty data in the first place?
