As a young man in middle America I had never heard of Nelson Mandela until the Specials' song came out in 1984. It's amazing how Mandela went from prisoner to President in less than 5 years, and how in spite of his years of suffering and imprisonment he still believed in peace and forgiveness. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AgcTvoWjZJU |

Madiba lived his life to the fullest A man who despite the weaknesses of man rose above his generation and did what nobody else had the faith/capacity to do. We have lost one of the great ones. May his light keep shining on! |

I taught the piano in a school in a nearby town today. Amongst many beautiful children are an English girl whose parents are both Indian, and the grand daughter of a Ugandan Asian thrown out of the country by Idi Amin in 1972. I found myself reflecting that in Apartheid South Africa, I would not even have been allowed in the same building as the girls, let alone teach them to play the piano. Nelson Mandela was a great man. His legacy will last for a long, long time. I salute him. |

As a resident in this beautiful country, I can only acknowledge his incredible achievement and be grateful for the legacy he tried to leave - an amazing man to whom we all owe tremendous gratitude. Unfortunately his successors have fallen well short of his calibre and many here feel trepidation following his departure. Let's hope we are are being unduly pessimistic, eh? |
