Post subject:  Whats the basic structure of a trend following system

Hello guys,

I have read a lot about trend following systems. As we all know trend following systems do not try to predict sth. Basically we try to come up with good indicators what worked excellent in the past and hope this trend will come again.

However, I was wondering if there is a generic structure in trend following systems? How does such, in your opinion, look like? What would you put into such a system, if you would create one?

Any good systems to recommend about trend following?

I really appreciate your answer!

There is no general method of detecting trend changes. There are dozens/hundreds of ways of doing it.

One simple example is the basic breakout system, similar to the one used by the Turtle traders:
Buy when price exceeds MAX(High,LongLength)
Exit long when price drops below MIN(Low,ShortLength)
Short when price drops below MIN(Low,LongLength)
Exit short when price exceeds MAX(High,ShortLength)

The trick is finding a system that doesn't get thrashed to death in sideways markets. Most markets spend most of their time wandering sideways, and those trendless periods can nibble away all the profit you get from the trend moves, and more.
