Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a new dedicated computer for trading.

I will run it almost as a VPS, so I can log on to it via Teamviewer when I'm away from home [I already have this setup, but with an old and rather tired PC!!].

It will only need to run 3 or 4 instances of Empty4, so it probably doesn't need to be anything fancy, but I want to get the best spec for my [very limited] budget!

So, I'm after suggestions as to what to look for? I have no idea about this kind of stuff!! But I'm guessing the processor speed and RAM size are the critical things?

Don't need monitor/keyboard or mouse.

All suggestions for either specification or specific machines welcome.

Hi Rob,

Have you considered getting a vps ? If comp is for serious trading purposes, you need to consider reliability and uptime.
You should consider going for CNS or Beeks at a location close to your broker's server.
Another newer vps broker which might be worth considering is : https://www.stvps.net/
Prices are slightly cheaper than beeks, but they only have low latency connection ( claim to be 1ms) to IC Markets and SynergyFX (?)

Empty4 4 platform update is to be released on Friday, July 4, 2014. It contains the following changes:

Terminal: Preparatory works for Cloud Hosting implementation.

Many traders want to arrange a reliable round-the-clock operation of the client terminal containing an active trading robot or following trading signals. One of the possible solutions is using VPS servers. However, finding a reliable provider, as well as diving into configuration and payment details require additional skills and time. Now, traders do not need VPS servers anymore.

Virtual Hosting Cloud is a server network distributed all around the world and supporting special versions of Empty4 client terminal. Selection of a suitable location, service plan, payment and synchronization is fully automated. A trader needs to complete only 5 steps in order to rent the virtual copy of a terminal with minimal network latency to the broker's trade server and select the most suitable service plan directly from Empty4 4.

Looks like disruptive innovation at its best here.
Providers like Beeks, CNS gonna start sweating here and pray CTrader or other platforms do not offer the same.

Maybe it's just me but I am wary of any VPS or provider that potentially has access to my trading logic. My strategies are anyway not high frequency/low latency and are long term. I know my broker could snoop off my trades and copy them, but at least they cannot steal my intellectual property. I am paranoid!

If you can install a memory chip and hardrive and install an operating system then these are ideal. Note they are "barebones" and contain no memory, hardrive or operating system. But you can buy then in a bundle from your favourite shop with all the required bits. They range from AUD $120 for the cheapest Celeron version to a couple of $100 for an I5 version.

Take a core i3 for 100 $

Take a good motherboard : Asus, Msi, Gigabyte : 75 - 100 $

Take a reliable ssd : samsung 840 pro : 120 $

Take 4 Go of memory : Kingston, Crucial, G Skill : 50- 75 $

Take a good power unit ( min 80 % efficiency ) : Corsair, Seasonic : 50 - 75 $


For a VPS we are searching for reliability components and low heat !

Hallo,

Thought to chime in earlier but unfortunately it's been a long time since I last assembled a PC, I know the specs have moved on greatly.

That said, the specs of a gaming machine would sort you out for as many Empty4 instances as you would like.

When it comes to reliability though (uptime, etc), a VPS may be the simplest (and cheapest?) option. I currently use linkuphost.com [ forexvps22 package, $22 a month, no complaints ]

Don't really fancy a paid for VPS. Would rather create my own "home made VPS."

Wouldn't know where to start with regard to building my own machine!!!

Maybe more research required!!!

A good workstation designed for the use of 24/24 7/7 will do the work. Important is that you have a reliable fast internet connection. Good offers you will find at exp. from Dell in the"for work" section, depends much on how much you will spent, how many Empty4 instances you will run, what indicators EA's ecc you will use ...
