I am trying to find out the largest weekend gaps that have occurred in the last 10 years for the most liquid currencies. Does anyone have this data or know where I can get it? Thanks |

Hi JellyBaby. That is a difficult question and probably no exact answer nor exact data for it. In reality, weekend gaps could vary a lot from Broker to Broker. In you had a Broker that would quote and accepts orders 24/7, ( I think a few around), most likely would be no or little gaps. Perhaps the prices moves would be more erratic due to lack of liquidity during these times as most Brokers are closed and not taking orders. So, the gaps of Brokers that close, and do not take orders during weekends, will depends at what time they stop quoting and taking orders on Friday, and the time they start on Sunday evening. 1 hour can make a lot of difference. Thanks Jeuro I am looking at what might be a worst case disaster scenario. Generally the weekend gaps don't bother me. But what might be the situation if say the Russians invaded East Ukraine Sunday morning, could we get a 500pip drop in the US$? |

Hard to say a worse case scenario. The Ruble and the Hryvnia are not heavily traded in the open market, but I assume a lot would be dumped affecting it. It is a good possibility the USD would go up momentarily. I mean, assuming that the Euro will not be the first choice of trade for being the closest to the conflict . In my opinion, the case scenario has already been factored in and discounted from the market. I assume most financial institution and have been playing hedge for a while, making the market somewhat dead with no much fluctuations. So, a big gap may never occur But at the end, no one knows what button and for how much non-speculator and speculator will push around the world. In other words, forex will be like always. J. |

NO if anything the opposite. Whenever there is a world crisis people put their money on the dollar. 500 pip also is a big exaggeration. Ukraine is not exactly a world changer if it does happen, no disrespect but it is not a major country. The big drop will more likely happen to the Euro because their energy pipeline goes through the Ukraine. Remember, Crete and Cyprus banking crisis a couple of years back?? That is where the Euro banks took 20% or more of everyone's account over 100K. There was a lot Russian money in those banks. Payback is a bitch isnt it? |

Go check 2008 and the banking crisis. I remember gaps in the hundreds back then. |

Hi Jelly, Simple answer is to use your favourite broker and download all the Daily data for as many years as you can get for as many pairs as you may think to trade. Export into .csv files, put these into excel or similar & then set up a maths formula to determine which bits cover a weekend. EG: if date of row 2 - date row 1 > 1 then must be a weekend. Then just to satisfy your curiosity (and as Jeuo suggested) get similar data from other brokers such as big Global Prime & several others & repeat the same exercise. Will only take a few hours to get fairly reliable past data. Of course, that will not necessarily contain future results. Cheers, Mick |
