For those of you new to all this, I remind you that Friday is the US Non-Farm Payroll news release. This happens on the first Friday in the month unless that happens also to be the first of the month, in which case it is moved to the second Friday.

News releases are no longer the thingy of terror that they were a decade ago, but they can cause chaos in the markets. NFP is one of the bigger releases, at 1.30 PM :London time (12.30 UTC). It is up to you to work out what time this is where you live.

Typically, the markets go to sleep in the hours leading up to the release of the NFP figures. Spreads widen dramatically. The actual news release sometimes triggers huge moves, albeit less often these days than a decade ago. My best advice to noobs is this: try to be out of the markets by about 12 hours before the release, and stay out until they reopen after the weekend.
