Old and defunct Holy Graily Bob

EA's inspired by nanningbob's work here, especially those based on his 240 Moving Average trend detection filter.

On a more serious note, one of the things I have grasped lately is that each new trade uses up gradually less and less margin. When you sit and think about it, you can work out why.

I read a while ago a post/thread/something by a guy who regularly trades all of his margin and uses margin calls as a stop loss. Can't remember who or where.

Like here, he was not talking about 3 ridiculously high lot trades that would blow the account come a margin call. He was talking about lots of small trades.

Something to think about perhaps? I have 39 trades open now.

Quite some bonanza if the markets move in my direction.

Probably a tad on the stuffed side if they don't.

Captain Jack traded using his margin as a stop loss I seem to recall.

I was talking a few months ago with someone that is part of a team developing a grid trading system. These are a bit of an anathema to me as I am much happier with just a few percent of my account at risk with any one trade. He was saying that their experience was that they had to use a much higher risk percentage or it just wouldn't work. He insisted it was more of a psychology thing than a real worry - as long as you got the maths right and the programming didn't fall over on you all you were doing was using your capital more efficiently. (I'm really not so sure with Empty4 if he was perhaps being a tad too brave).

Anyway, getting to the point... he also said they use margin calls as a back-stop failsafe mechanism but that you have to be very careful with how your broker applies the margin calls and what they actually do with each individual order. Apparently there are some considerable differences to how different brokers proceed that can really ruin your day if you were expecting, for example, oldest trade to be closed but in fact they went and took 90% off all your open positions instead. Not sure how/if you could test this properly with a demo account to see how your EA's trade management would handle it!

Best regards

Jeff

PS Blinding bit of work this EA and indicator!

Thanks for the offer Steve, I will sing out in the future when I know what will be usefull.
In the meantime I'll use attached MPTM, which works with tradecomments.

No need to waste your time on a wild goosehunt.

Hi,
My results today (1st trial)... only a small test, ootb except using 4tf (5m, 15m, 1h, 4h) on 1 pair - eurusd - from 2.15pm(uk after the news) until 8.40pm(manually closing 5 trades & cancelling orders, stopping bot).
Max pips I saw was about >+500pips... closed now for +285pips (33 trades)...
Great job Steve/Bob/all
Thanks

Early days but it looks as though mptm/mpbm might have a role here - usual global closure thingy. We shall see.

Having a blast though.

:xm:
Yesterday I used MPTM to close all on a small profit to see what happened. It failed twice as it closed only some of the trades then stopped, left all pendings. I tried with MTBM no magic or comment version which closed all trades but left the pendings.

Later on a H4 I closed all when I saw a $50.00 profit, which I probably would have done if it was real money. No trades for a long time after closing but currently the account is -$52 in DD so the MPBM exercise did not achieve anything, at least in this case.

One MPBM experiment proves nothing, but what about the possibility of opening on the H4 filters and closing on H1 arrows? It could be worth a try rather than a global close.

And it is a blast, the possibilities are tantalizing!

Bye bye floating, non-banked, demo pips
So it makes sence to trail/ jump the stops...

I still don't see VVV, so it might be a temporarily move.
Have you been playing with stops yet? I had left them ootb and was primarily waiting for opposite signal/wavy lines to close positions.
However with the slip in the markets last night (Euro/US session; I'm in Australia) the green pips dwindled and a number of trades were closed out for about 2% loss on the account which isn't a lot until you hold it against the 15% floating yesterday :arrrg:

As you guys have already said MPTM will likely find a place in managing HGB. Be it as a basket trader or just individual trade types.

I've set up the latest HGB today with JS/BE 30 with 5 BEP on a relatively fresh account. Lets see what NFP throws at us

I've been watching the hgi on 15m t/f for a few days, letting it run on multiple pairs, & seeing all the alerts/signals as they change with time (a lot lot more (see attached example) than is seen when you just refresh and look historically - at a nice clean chart with few signals). In the end I thought I'd better just get started (as my brain was hurting trying to figure out from all the signals, what was what), and still hadn't decided which t/f, so plumped for 4 all at once just to see what would happen and which if any t/f I'd prefer.

Too early for any conclusions, but maybe there's something in running multiple t/f.. I'm thinking any change in trend shows first on lower t/f, so you may start getting pips on the lower t/f as the trend changes, as the higher t/f lose still being locked into the older trend???

just thinking out loud.

it's an interesting indi & ea

I would not say that you are an amatuer coder, started as an amatuer. But ehh not anymore

I have a little thought , but i have to follow it next week. (Tomorrow hospital day again).
Only not easy to make i think.
Signal Trend or Rad buy, Next signal first buy BE and buy the second, 3 next buy signal first buy stoploss to second buy entry, second buy BE,
open new buy etc, as soon opposite arrow come close all. Or something like that :)

Maybe Tomasso can help you with it. He made me an ea that has the same idea different structure.
But before thinking about it let's watch if it make sense.

Loaded the i version without st tp and without the range.
Old trades are still open (i suppose they are managed anyway), I want to see what it is doing during  yesterday and tomorrow the big news days.

Goodnight to all.
Cheers

My thoughts are giving the RAD a TP of D1-ATR, and the range trades a TP of H1-ATR.
Trendtrades I will leave for themselves to close when HGB sees fit.

This avoids giving back à bunch of green on a reversal. I'll try MPTM to put up the TP using the commentfield.
I like that idea. I've been thinking about giving the range trades justice and tried stuff like manually modifying TP for those to .0s or .5s, eyeballing the extent of the ranges at the moment, but ATR may just be easier.

I'm still struggling with their SLs though, been thinking about setting it around the arrow, but that often calls for a bigger move to keep RR ratio acceptable.

As for the rads, I think we all saw the potential today :p I'm testing on a manual demo only opening rads when one or more range is already running in the green (for that pair), and setting SLs to basket breakeven. Easier said than done though, as rads are breakout trades, and like all breakouts, often get an instant retrace to fake the fake :p If you were too greedy on the rad add, basket BE was too close and you're back to square one.

So basically, fun times ahead :)

On another note, I was trying to find some missing sell arrows on fresh charts, and was trying of seeing the "repainting" issue more like an update like Bob suggested. I'm just the occasional tinkerer here, not a coder, so I have no idea if an EA would be capable of say, re-applying an indicator and telling you 'look, i'd love to tell you that signal still stands but things have changed".

Sorry about the ranting, I think I need sleep, at some point when writing I always feel like what I say doesn't even make sense to me :p May be why I've only been lurking until now
