Holy Graily Bob

EA's inspired by nanningbob's work here, especially those based on his 240 Moving Average trend detection filter.

Holy Graily Bob

Post by SteveHopwood »

SERIOUS WARNING
  • Most Forex traders lose all their money.
  • Using the robot posted here in trading Forex does not guarantee success.
  • Trading this robot could lead to serious financial loss.
  • Trading this robot without understanding its underlying trading strategies guarantees traders will lose their money.
  • This is not a set-and-forget ea; there is no such thing and anyone who tries to claim there is, is either stupid or lying. This ea requires frequent manual intervention.
  • At best, a trading robot is only 90% as good as the manual strategy it trades. At best. At worst, it can be much less effective. If the strategy is rubbish, so is the robot.
  • To trade this robot, you have to understand:
    • How to use EA's.
    • Bob's HGI indicator.
MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS POST http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 41#p111241 There was a Forex bloodbath on Jan 15th 2015 that you need to know about.

Holy Graily Bob is an attempted automation of trading with Bob's Holy Grail Indicator. Download Bob's zipfile from http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 45#p105045. You need a version of HGI in your Indicators Folder - extract it from the zipfile. Remember to change HGB's HGI_Name input to the name of the version you are using, or he will be excessively rude to you.

Newbie traders, you are the luckiest noobs in the history of the train wreck that is retail Forex trading. HGI is the culmination of about 6 years work by nanningbob. You can trade manually by sitting at your console reading a book and simply reacting to the HGI signals. This is the most exciting development in my 8 years experience of the train wreck. Just make sure you absorb "HGI and so-called 'repainting'" from further down this post.

HGB is attached. All the information you need to use it is in the user guide.

Are you a confused newbie? Don't clutter this thread with requests for basic information - I will delete them. Ask instead at http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 91#p105691 where friendly souls will help you out.

The attached Scripts.zip has a suite of scripts to help with opening/closing/deleting trades. There is a pdf to tell you what they do.

Have fun Gals and Ungals.

Edit 13th June 2016
This thread started over a year ago. It gradually petered out as we learned to combine HGI with a variety of other features. I am reviving it following Bob's new thread at http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... =88&t=4735.

I have added CSS to HGB. The first 32 pages of this thread are still valid, as the only difference is the added CSS. To join the discussion about HGB + CSS, jump to http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 98#p141998.

:xm:

Manual intervention
To those of you with the occasional firing brain cell who are not too stupid and lazy to take any notice of anything I write: congratulations on reading this bit. You are in a minority. Read this post:
http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 77#p119077 You will not be sorry that you did so.

Stochastic
HGB often takes trades when a pair is over-extended and due a snap retrace. I have added a Stochastic filter in an attempt to avoid trading at the extremes.

Those of you new to all this, Stochastic is an Oscillator that gives us an indication when a pair is over bought or over sold and is due a retrace.

I have used the indi defaults for the inputs, and used the usual levels for StochOverBought and StochOverSold. StochReadIntervalMinutes tells HGB to read Stochastic once a minute, so it will usually be out of synch with the indi.

Asking me to add more indicators to 'filter the trades better'
Forget it. I will delete your post - on a good day. On a bad day, I will delete your post and move you to the On Moderation group; members of that group can do bugger all here. On a really bad day (and I have endured a lot of those recently - ask around) I will ban you and delete your registration. I am not Bob. He has the patience of a saint. I have the patience of an irritable Lion with lunch on its mind and espying a litter of kittens.

So, when you want an extra indi added to HGB, think twice before asking for it. Then abandon the idea. If it still seems like a good idea after that, think a third time and then abandon the idea. I will think you are a dimwit. I am not sympathetic towards dimwits who ignore my advice and tend to let my lack of sympathy show.

Having said all that, there is a way you can have your fav indis added to HGB. Old stagers/experienced traders already know what I am about to write.

It is this: combine your fav indi with HGI in live (not demo) trading and demonstrate that it has helped you make more pips than you would have done without it.

HGI and so-called 'repainting'
Members new to all this have difficulty grasping the implications of this deceptively simple fact: The Holy Grail Indicator works in the here and now:
  • what happened on the previous candle is irrelevant.
  • what happened 5 minutes ago is irrelevant.
  • what happened on the previous tick is irrelevant.
The only thing that matters is what HGI is showing now. There is a problem with this and here it is: the indicator generates a signal (how is briefly described in the User Guide) which generates a trade. The conditions that generated the trade can change but the signal does not leave the chart until you refresh it by changing time frames or restarting the platform. Thus it looks as though the indi is 'repainting'.

It is not. When loaded, it cannot print a signal for trading conditions that do not exist. The fact that they existed 5 minutes ago is irrelevant; the indi works in the here and now and cannot know that they existed 5 minutes ago? 'Historic' signals are on the chart because the conditions that created them were still in place at the candle close; there is no way of telling how early in the development of that candle those conditions first came into being.

Got it? Tough if not because I do not care. What I do care about is being dragged here to read yet another whinge about 'repainting' by a dimwit too thick to understand the basic concept of 'here and now'. I shall delete posts about it - along with the writer if I am in a bad mood. Sorry to sound harsh, but I am doing some 'heading off at the pass' here.

HGB makes shed-loads of pips, then gives them right back
HGB is absolutely brilliant when the markets move in his favour. Those multi-trades rack up the pips.

Thing is, those large moves are always followed by a pull-back. Strongly rising markets start to fall; strongly falling markets start to rise. These 'corrections' can last for some time before the overall trend resumes its move.

HGI is total rubbish at spotting when the change has started and will continue to generate signals in the direction of the trend. HGB will take these signals and enter trades in the teeth of the howling gale of the retrace. We give all our pips straight back.

It is absolutely essential that users learn to close down positions that are massively in your favour - then stop trading for the week. People make 1000, 1500, 2000 pips in a day, adding anything up to about 20% to their account balance. Believe me guys and nonguys - I have gone whole years without making that number of pips.

Emblazon this upon your hearts and souls folks: take your profits; close your positions; turn off Experts on your platform; sit on your hands and do not trade again that week.

This post contains notes of relevance to coders.

I have rationalised a number of functions that were previously separate in the old HGB, into single functions that use the passed parameters to guide the path the code needs to follow. I do not guarantee that everything is rock solid, but at least bloops should be easier to find. Changes to the coding logic should be simpler to implement as well.

Tommaso just sent me a pm saying that the default HGI_Name refers to a version that he sent me but which is not yet published.

Make sure you have whatever is the latest published version from Bob's thread and change HGI_Name accordingly.

Hi Steve,

Just wanted to say thanks again for going back to basics, as simplicity is always key!

Like you say, less moving parts! LESS THINGS TO GO WRONG!

I am personally grateful to you, Tommaso, Bob and the rest of the gang who put this whole project together in the first place. THANK YOU!

Funny thing is, I never used the range set-up, always had it to false. So it won't be missed on my part.

Anyway Steve, looking forward to the new age of HGB 2015... :!!:

Kindest regards
Tony
