I think, grid traders seem to be best on pairs with regular swings not necessarily tight ADR such as EURCHF

AUDCAD, AUDNZD, USDCAD, EURGBP, CADCHF, SGDJPY and possibly GBPCHF all look like candidates to me

My AUDCAD demo even survived happily the sudden AUD drop today

ATR and such are useful to choose the Step (distance between trades) for the pair.

But a pair small or big ATR don't makes difference if price is trending in one direction without significant retracements.

Trades will get "stretched" the same.

Ideally RnR should detect (and trade) ranges and avoid trends.

Maybe below indicator (use in 5M) idea can be integrated someway:

Thanks for VolatilityChart Rene. I have attached it to post 1 so newcomers can find it easily.

...Single chart GJ live is ticking forwards quite nicely this week with 316 pips banked including open trades. Not bad for a Tuesday lunchtime

I have celebrated by reducing the grid size from 5 to 4 rather than adding any more pairs at this stage as the 11 pair demo understandably still has a lot of drawdown to untangle although I am sure may catch-up by the end of the week.

... it will sure be interesting to see

Yes,

EURUSD shows the weakness of the system on these strong moves, with minimal pullbacks.

My performance is clearly worse than yours, maybe related to some bugs squashed by Steve over the weekend, but I'm more convinced that it was related to initially testing using a 2 pip grid. Small grids and big moves leave a lot of trades far away to be offset! I also did not have the 20% balance stop in place, only the partial one.

Despite my poor judgement in small grid size and not setting the stop, I do believe this grid system still needs work, not just on trying to offset the biggest losing trades, but also in winning more pips on the winning trades. My biggest disappointment in the graph above was not the multiple distant losing sell trades which is always to be expected when grid trading, but how little profit was booked by all the successful buy trades in a strong move.

Any weekend gap or NFP/interest rate decision could put this system in similar trouble.

What I wonder is how the EA decides wether to close complex single or double side offset.
If/ when the complex opposite side was closed before the complex single side, there would be a fighting chance.

Maybe incorporate an MA to tell the EA what side to close first?
I can imagine the blood on the wall of Steve's house when trying to implemend this

We all hear the stories of "markets only trends 30% of the time" etc.
I still see a future for this EA, maybe with sensible griddistance like 1/10 of ADR or something.

My demo with Gridtrading from daily open with offsetting in place does allright.
Nothing tradable yet since there are huge gaps formed in the grid due to the offsetting, but good profit.

I have this VolatiltyChart indi, that I coded a long time ago. It might still prove useful. Columns are sortable.
Renexxx,

Does this use ATR or ADR?

Could it be modified to include sortable columns of ratios of e.g. ratio of daily ADR to Weekly ADR. This may give a rough measure of "pullbackability" or daily overlap. I think this EA would work best on pairs not only with High ADR, but with a low ratio of weekly ADR to daily ADR, i.e. lots of volatility but going nowhere.

I think it all comes down to the MinOpenTradeStartOffset number. I set mine to 3 and I've made 29pips in the last 3h on a nice down trend. The EA can actually work in a trend if you set the correct distance and you don't allow the grid to open too many trades.
Capture2.PNG
The history shows the EA closing 2/3 trades at the same time during the trend and 4 trades at the end as the market starts ranging.

I'm wondering how/when the EA opens hedged trades as I haven't seen many so far.

Cheers

The offsetting order:
  • 1. Simple.
    2. Double-sided complex.
    3. Single-sided complex.
