EA's inspired by nanningbob's work here, especially those based on his 240 Moving Average trend detection filter.

I find that quite often even though a trade signal is given the trade is not taken because of a spread event at the start of the trading day. I was expecting the trade to be taken once the spread went back to normal, but that's not what happens.

I will do more testing but will this problem be fixed if I set EveryTickMode=true. It would seem that setting is much more important on the higher TFs. How are people using this setting on various TFs.

Seems to happen on lower TFs too but is less of an issue there.

Edit: EveryTickeMode=true fixed my problem by the way.
I still have a problem as outlined in my original post above. Spread events can sometimes run well into the first hour of trading after rollover. The EA may give a signal but it won't take the trade while there is spread event happening. This is all good but it can lead to "missed" trades because I find the trade isn't taken when the spread event finishes. Missing trades on D1 TF is not good because trades are so few and far between.

The problem can be "fixed" by setting EveryTickMode=true. This forces the trade to be taken when the spread event finishes. But if that trade is stopped out on the same day the EA just opens the trade again as soon as it's closed. It does this because EveryTickMode is true.

Can anyone suggest a way around this problem. I could turn off spread checking altogether but that's a not a good idea. Basically I don't want to miss any trades but I only want one trade per pair per trading TF.

Here's a few samples of the testing I've been doing, just to give an idea what the EA does when simply trading the SS signals and stop/reversing on the SS colour change using SS settings of 14,50,0.8.
HGBnDnSS Magic 107 (D1 14,50,0.8) - excl XAUUSD.PNG
Above is a month long D1 test where trades were exited at 23.00 on Fridays and those trades were (manually) re-entered the following Monday if SS condition was still in place. This was just to avoid weekend risk exposure.
HGBnDnSS Magic 113 (D1 14,50,0.8).PNG
Above is another month long D1 test, (actually the following month) where trades were left running over the weekend.

Results are highly variable ofcourse, it depends on what pairs are moving during the test periods. The first month it was EUR, the second month it was GBP. But the idea is to capture those big moves seen and ride them as long as possible, then cut those losses with an ATR stop and choose pairs that would most likely be suited to this very simple strategy.

Because this is D1 trading where trades can run for weeks the results also depend very much on when the test is started. I will leave the second test above running indefinitely and this should provide a more accurate picture in a longer timeframe.

I have included higher time frame control in some of my testing. Below is the D1 result I posted previously. It covers 1 month of trading starting on 22/5/2017. Trades are taken on the SS colour change and stopped/reversed on the next SS colour change. There is no HTF control.
HGBnDnSS Magic 113 (D1 14,50,0.8).PNG
Below is the D1 result for the exact same period, exact same pairs, exact same everything as the first pic, except it uses HTF of W1. There is no exit on HTF SS colour change.
HGBnDnSS Magic 109 (D1W1 14,50,0.8).PNG
Keep in mind that the test periods are quite short, even 1 month is short when testing on D1, but generally I have found that HTF control adds absolutely zero value. All it does is reduces the number of trades quite drastically and filters out a lot of the big winners. I have found this also to be the case with H1 tests using D1 as HTF control. I haven't done any tests using dual HTF.

Here's an update after 2 months of continuous testing. To recap, this is taking every Super Slope signal on D1 (21 pairs), stopping/reversing on opposite signal, no stops/TPs, no filters. Super Slope settings are 14,50 with threshold 0.8. Entries and exits are on SS colour change with SS yellow (threshold) colour ignored. Trades are held over the weekend.

With this style of trading eventually you have positions on all 21 pairs. Only 41 trades over 2 months, This is still not enough data to meaningfully optimise stop/TP. I will just keep this test running.

What I'm doing here is looking for the "simplest trading system ever" (Bob's words). So there are no fancy filters, whatifs, or ifs buts and maybes. It just trades the SS signal and reverses when it sees the next one. The trading decision is based on the last closed candle, never on the current candle. I had to tweak the code a little bit to get it to work that way.

I'll run this test for many months to see what comes of it, to see what pairs may or may not be suited to this simple strategy, to see if a stop or a TP would help. I expect a stop will help so the losses can be somewhat controlled. Don't think a TP would help, best I think to let trades just run and be taken out by the opposite signal. Trades can last for weeks, on a good run swap costs are not that important when you look at the pips on offer. It trades on average about once/day across all 21 pairs so commissions are negligible.

I'm not going into this blinkered. I expect this account to blow up one day, just like most accounts do. Anyway let's see what happens. If there was ever an indicator that could be used successfully in such a simple trading system, I think SS is it.

This is very interesting and I applaud your logical approach. Most of us never got round to testing on D1 alone because the excitement with an EA is the ability to test lower timeframes than what one would perhaps trade manually but actually what you are doing makes perfect sense. And I have also found D1 Superslope invaluable in my trading, regardless of the system being used.

With regards to potentially adding a SL I have found that also adding a fairly wide Jumping SL works well (without breakeven) I have been using 1 x D1 ATR with good effect and I reckon this would easily compound the effects of your system as it would close out winners at a better price than opposite Superslope most of the time.

Hope this helps and keep going :good:

Hi Guys,
I am making some headway with Dclayw's inputs, well what I have seen from his writings and which has attracted my attention. Pre lim results are looking good.

Hope to post at some point. Thanks Dclayw :good:

Leon,
Good one, I do think SS deserves thorough testing in its native form. I've sent you a PM with some more info.
