My take on the question is...
It's OK to lose money if you have time to recover and mitigate against the loss !
Pension and investment advisors advise more risk in your younger days and a scaling down of the risk element of your investment portfolio as you approach retirement and older age.
This is logical and makes sense. A younger person can lose most or all of their investments and recover because they have TIME.
Fortunately, Forex prices tend (in general) to move slowly. Yes I know the CHF meltdown, Brexit (GBP) and NFP stories exist. But in general, prices especially at timeframes above H1 tend to move in a pedestrian rather than Usain Bolt fashion.
This pedestrian personality of higher TF prices gives GT&WV room to accept losses AND mitigate against them by taking new trades that turn a profit.

Gravy Trains & Weather Vanes
Initial Trade
Based on a chart that presents as Here, price is indicating, ahead of the first trade, that it is rising by the following signals:
1) The current candle and the last one are both Bull candles.
2) The 8 period (white) EMA is above the 24 period (red) EMA AND It is sloped upwards as in it is rising further.
The initial trade is the one and only time GT&WV uses an indicator of past prices to predict what the future holds !!
Definitions
1) The initial trade is known as a seed in GT&WV.
2) This seed, on a micro account is 0.01 lots in size.
3) The purpose of the seed is to determine whether we have a Gravy Train or a Weather Vane price movement.
A Gravy Train is a seed that carries on in the indicated direction, breaks even and thereby generates the price driven condition for a new trade entry in the same direction.
A Weather Vane is a seed that fails to move in the indicated direction, does not break even and breaches a previously identified support or resistance zone. On breaching that zone, price is demonstrating its new direction and the weather vane momentum triggers contra direction trades.
When a chart presents as above
A long trade (seed) at 0.01 lots is taken. MPTM then applies the SL and TP (Setfiles are described and shown in the appropriate section)
Long Initial (Seed) Trade
Examine the chart and determine a support zone for prices near the trade entry point. I usually look for the lowest low of the previous 4 candles (in H1 and D1 timeframes). If this does not show a reasonable support zone, I look for another in the vicinity of the current price.
At the support zone I draw a white dashed line. This is the line that when breached price is telling me a Weather Vane has emerged and it is time to enter CONTRA trades (Shorts) to the intial seed.
If the seed becomes a Gravy Train, the initial long position will break even. As soon as the seed trade breaks even, price is indicating it is moving in the originally identified direction and a new trade in the SAME direction (Continuation) is appropriate.
Short Initial (Seed) Trade
Examine the chart and determine a resistance zone for prices near the trade entry point. I usually look for the highest high of the previous 4 candles (in H1 and D1 timeframes). If this does not show a reasonable resistance zone, I look for another in the vicinity of the current price.
At the resistance zone I draw a white dashed line. This is the line that when breached price is telling me a Weather Vane has emerged and it is time to enter CONTRA trades (Longs) to the intial seed.
If the seed becomes a Gravy Train, the short position will break even. As soon as the seed breaks even, price is indicating it is moving in the originally identified direction and a new trade in the SAME direction (Continuation) is appropriate.
Notes
Contra and Same direction trades vary in lot size from 0.03 down to 0.01 depending on the leverage used on your micro account. These will be described in more detail in the section on continuation and reversal trades.
Reasonable S/R zone – I define reasonable as a zone that has held for a few candles (4 on H1 and 5 on D1). This has evolved due to my own testing !!! Your testing may reveal a superior S/R decision making protocol. If so, share it !
The seed trade above was long on 7th August. MPTM has added a TP (Red dashed line above the trade.) However, prices then went into a decline and approach the white dashed support line which was drawn when the seed was entered.
This indicates a Weather Vane is emerging when contra trades (shorts) will be appropriate.
The next section will discuss same direction (continuation) and contra trades and their rules.

A few observations re last post on the "Initial Trade"
1) Do the EMA configurations matter ?
Short answer, no they do not.
The configuration values I use are logical in my mind - For H1 an 8 period EMA signifies a working day. The longer 24 period signifies a full day.
The purpose is merely to give me an indication of where past prices suggest future prices are going.
2) Do I have to get the initial trade direction correct ?
Not really. The initial trade is a subjective trade.
Subjective in the sense that current price, which is the final arbiter, the judge dread of trading could decide I am right or I am wrong despite the indicator. You do not have to get the direction right in order to make money. Remember an ultra realist does not care about direction !
In practice, I would like my seed trades to become Gravy trains by price giving them objectivity and achieving break even. This is the easier way to make money. (This will be explained more in the post on continuation and reversal trades)
However, if price decides I am wrong and the seed becomes a Weather Vane, that too is OK as I can use the decision to make money from this situation as well.
3) Lot size of seed trade
For a micro account (I am trading a 500 USD initial balance account) the seed is minimum value 0.01 lots regardless of account leverage. The account leverage comes into play due to the large number of trades that price can indicate on a given pair if it is sufficiently volatile.
Continuation and reversal trades vary depending on account leverage - as will be explained later.

Hey BobbyT
Thanks for your answer. Some observations if I may.
I agree it is OK to lose money - and indeed if you cannot cope with losing trades, days, weeks and even months then perhaps Forex trading isn't best suited to you.
Learning from losing trades in Forex is quite difficult because a trade can move into red ink and teach you zilch. Sometimes however, and I will come back to this, you can learn from "a general environment of loss" such as if your Stop Losses tend as a rule to tail gate price and therefore get hit too often. This ironically often happens because traders want to protect against loss.
Price needs room to move and if you strangle that room you may have losing trades and a pattern that you can learn from may emerge.
Charles
I agree 100%. A single loss can often tell you nothing about why it failed. I feel this is part of the probabilistic nature of forex as suggested by GT3RS.
This is why daily/weekly/monthly performance appraisals and trade revision is required. When we analyse trades as bulk data we can see patterns in our losses such as that suggested by you like trailing stops being too tight.
Liking this thread so far mate. Keep up the good work.
Cheers,
BobbyT

Continuation Trades
Gravy Train Continuation Trades
I love trading with music in the background. A favorite tune is one by the late BB King called “Never make a move too soon.”
Patience will reward you greatly in trading.
Once your initial subjective trade (seed) has been given market objectivity by price and it breaks even, you can now add a pyramid trade in the same direction as the seed.
Do not be tempted into adding a continuation trade BEFORE price has made your initial seed objective by breaking it even !!
This patience means that even if price reverses, you only have one live trade in the market because the original will be taken out at a minimum of break even.
The continuation trade in this event is at 0.02 lots on a 1:100 leverage broker and 0.03 lots on a 1:500 leverage broker.
Note: The scripts I use to add these continuation trades and setfiles for MPTM, which applies the appropriate SL / TP / BE and Trailing stops will be posted on this thread at the end of the user manual serialization. EDIT 22/8/17 - Now runs with a custom EA called GTWV EA. Scripts and MPTM no longer required - read on for more
On a lower leverage broker you must be careful not to lower your margin level below 100% (Equity / Margin). This is getting close to margin call country. Therefore, after price has “approved” your initial trade at BE, add a higher lot size trade on the Gravy Train, but use common sense and do not over margin your live position.
On the higher margin broker you can go to 0.03 lots on a micro account for your continuation trade after price has “approved” your seed and broken even.
On Gravy Trains you only add ONE trade each time price breaks the last one even. This is in order to manage your greed instinct.
Ultra realists will take as much as they can from the market when it is moving in their direction. They do so only when directed by price. They are not greedy and they do not make moves too soon!
In the image above you see an initial short trade (seed) that has broken even. At that point and not before I add ONE Gravy Train continuation trade at a higher number of lots in the same direction (short)
Contra Trades
Weather Vane Contra Trades
Prices may reverse after you input your initial trade and breach your support / resistance zone.
In this case you now have a Weather Vane and price is clearly telling you of its new direction.
In this event after price breaches your S/R zone, you input 4 trades in the contra direction to your original seed. EDIT 22/8/17 - Operationally this requirement changed with the advent of GTWV EA - read on for more
Why 4 trades on a Weather Vane contra position- Is this not greedy ? EDIT 22/8/17 - This section now redundant due to GTWV EA. However, if manual trading this strategy it still applies !!- read on for more
Your original seed is now in reversal. It will hit it’s stop loss at some time in the indeterminable future.
However, as we have discussed on this thread, prices move at a pedestrian pace most of the time. This means that before the seed hits it’s SL you have TIME to mitigate the loss by adding new trades each time price confirms its new direction.
There is no law that says our Weather Vane contra trades must number 4. This is just a number I found convenient and manageable when monitoring several pairs. This number can be varied perhaps with different results. That is a test case that can be investigated !
Using the time between breach of S/R and seed hitting its SL is the reason why you must actively manage this method ! You must use this time to input new trades as soon as price tells you to do so by making the last entered position break even. This is how you mitigate the loss on your seed.
How does price confirm its new direction ?
By breaking even the last of the 4 trades. Remember never make your move too soon ! Wait till all 4 trades are at BE, then add another bunch of 4 trades and so on.
On a 1:100 leverage broker I use lot sizes of 0.02, 0.01, 0.01, 0.01 for the Weather Vane trades.
On a 1:500 leverage broker I use lot sizes of 0.03, 0.02, 0.01, 0.01 for the Weather Vane trades.
Again, this is so as to manage the margin levels on the micro accounts.
In the image below the seed was a long position. Prices revered and breached a support zone. This now became a Weather Vane. At that point I added 4 contra (short) trades at varying lot sizes.
Now that we have the mechanics In the next post I will look at the practical operation of the GT&WV method

Gravy Trains & Weather Vanes
Practical Operation
Initial Trade Entry
After setting up your chart with the two EMA’s, add a trade (seed) in the direction (subjectively) determined.
Find the support / resistance zone closest to current price (I look back about 4 candles as a start). At that point draw a line to show where you will start inputting CONTRA trades to the seed if price reverses on you.
Seed trades are ALWAYS 0.01 lot sizes.
Allow price to do it’s thing !
Gravy Train
If your subjective seed trade is “approved” by price it will go to break even. Great !
As soon as, and not before, the seed breaks even add another SINGLE trade in the same (continuation) direction.
If your new continuation GT trade also breaks even add another and so on. Make money while the sun shines.
Gravy Train single continuation trades are 0.02 lots on a 1:100 leverage account and 0.03 on a 1:500 leverage account.
MPTM will add the SL and TP.
EDIT 22/8/17 - GTWV EA adds the trades and manages them. MPTM no longer required - read on for more
Weather Vane
If your subjective seed trade is “rejected” by price it will breach the support / resistance level you drew earlier.
When price CLOSES beyond the support resistance zone, you have a signal to start entering CONTRA trades. Enter these CONTRA trades when the new candle starts.
Sometimes when price breaks out beyond a support resistance zone it can move fast even on higher timeframes.
For this reason, if a price breaks the S/R zone and moves a distance equivalent to the ATR for the pair and TF, you can use this movement as an alternative signal to enter your contra trades immediately.
If ALL 4 of your contra WV trades also break even (and not before !!) add another group of 4 trades and so on. Your seed is in reversal so it will hit its stop loss, you must make money on the contra trades to mitigate that loss and make a positive profit into the bargain.
Weather Vane multiple trades are 0.02, 0.01, 0.01, 0.01 lots on a 1:100 leverage account and 0.03, 0.02, 0.01,0.01 on a 1:500 leverage account.
MPTM will add the SL and TP.
I have made a slight change to MPTM which I am querying with Steve, as soon as I have his approval that the change is legit I will post the MPTM including setfiles for H1, H4 and D1 timeframes.
I will also see about how to get the scripts for adding new trades to you guys - these scripts were not written here so I am wary of posting scripts obtained elsewhere. I guess I can do that in PM's ?
EDIT 22/8/17 - GTWV EA adds the GT & WV trades. No longer a manual process - read on for more
There it is guys - test it out, comment, question, rebuild it.
BTW as of next week I will start posting my test results - remember the litmus test is add 20 USD to the balance daily every day !!

I just notice in the image examples "init trade and sr zone" and "GT Continuation Trade", that the current and previous bars do not seem to agree with the current direction. Am I reading this incorrectly?
So... you are just waiting to see these 2 signals, then seeding can begin?
BTW, I have my charts all set-up and ready for Monday as well. Hopefully I may get some time this weekend to run a few paper test scenarios so I can get the idea locked.

Seeding is subjective.
You can begin immediately you are ready to enter the trench for the ensuing warfare. You don't have to wait for signal 1 and / or 2 !
The ONLY reason I look at the EMA's and the bars is to give myself the best chance of developing a Gravy Train when and IF Price "accepts' my subjective seed.
It is not critical nor indeed essential to have a GT !
You can make money from WV (contra) trades as well when the price moves beyond your support resistance zone.
If you are ready to go on Monday PM me for the MPTM I am using, the scripts and the set files.
BTW what TF's are you intending to trade ? I recommend H1, H4 and D1.

Probably H4 or D1. I will be able to check a couple of times a day (4?) so I may aim at H4, simply because it has more bars to guide me.
