i bought a new computer with win7, and am now having trouble moving files!
formerly i would download the new version of a Empty4 file into my experts or indicators folder, edit it to set lots size, ecn, etc. and compile it for use. and then move a copy to another brokers folder to use the program there as well.
now, new computer, new operating system, and i cannot find and move files. there is no win explorer, but the directories can be pulled up thru start-computer. all looks ok until i try to copy the file to another directory (broker), and what i get is an older and unedited version. other strange things happen, but not regularly enough to describe yet. how do i get the new copy from folder 1 into folder 2? copy and paste nor mouse drag work as expected. where is the system finding the old/original copy? can someone explain what is happening?

I'm guessing your old system was XP? In Vista and in win7, C:\Program Files (and C:\Program Files (x86) if your system is 64-bit) are "protected" directories. Software installers can write files there, but ordinary applications -- like Empty4 -- can't.
Instead, they create "shadow" directories unique to each user. Whenever Empty4 tries to write a file in the Program Files directory (which is where it stores all its data, a no-no), win7 invisibly redirects the file to C:\Users\user\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\InstallDirectory
This gets incredibly confusing, since sometimes it looks like the files are under Program Files, and sometimes it doesn't. My VERY STRONG recommendation: don't use the default install location under Program Files. Install your Empty4 under some other location, like under C:\Trading or something like that, and the problem will go away.

thank you, gary. i suspected win7 was doing something that i did not (and still do not) understand. but with your explanation, i have something to work on. - now with that, i can get back to the problem with why my nb10.2 is not opening trending trades.

Like Gary said the best way is to install your Empty4 under another directory than program files.
And there is one more thing to do.
On your desk, right click on your Empty4 shortcut, and execute solve compatibility problem. Believe me, you should do these, before i did these, my new system like you (win 7) , my Empty4 didn't save my charts, etc ...
And the thing i hate with win 7 now i have this new system, i have constant hard drive access for nothing 1 or 10 ko/s. I fear for the life of the hard drive.

crashout, where's this "solve compatibility problem" option? I don't see anything like that...

Hi guys, here's my 2 cents on this;
windows 7 only has the compat thingy in windows 64bit. If you run Empty4 in compatability mode, you create a new set of file for Empty4 in the 'program. this can be a headache and if you dont understand windows, even more a pain in the ass.
if you have win64bit,it should install in the standard 'program files' folder for 64bit, but if it see's you are installing a 32bit prog, it should go to the porgram files (86) folder automatically.
if you look at the next file on your c-drive, it should be 'program files(x86)' , this is the normal windowsx86 or 32bit folder, and where i install all my Empty4's accounts, although i run windows 64bit.
so, all 32 bit progs should be installed in the (86) folder, and any 64bit capable programs go to the normal 'progam files' folder. MT5 is win64 doable and this is one of the reasons we all might be moving over to it sooner than later. The pro's are the use of all your memory as windoze 32bit (86), limits are 3,5 gig of ram and 64 bit i think is 24gigs with the latest intel chips and boards.
if you change the exe folder to point to the win64 folder (you do this when you 'run in compatability mode' by right clicking on the Empty4 crims exe file and select it), then you create a whole new group of files for exactly the same Empty4 instance and account, but in the opposite program files folder. so you would have one running as 32 bit and the other as 64 bit mode. i have done this in error and find they both work side by side, but also create their own charts, so when you create one in the compatability mode, you wont find it on the other instance and also when you try to delete , it only deletes in the instance you are in off-course. If you want to save deleted charts, you have to do that in both instances in the options tab in the Empty4 instance, where you select 'charts' and then check the option to save deleted charts.
you would have to set up all the charts and indis and ea's on each platform or instance that you want to run.
i hope im not confusing you when you read this, but in my experience, i have tried to centralise all the indis and ea's but have not been able to get them to work correctly, and way too cumbersome. i start, but the time in the day runs out and i never finish the procedure, and then i forget to carry on the next day cos toooo much going on.
it's a pain but i have'nt found a better solution yet. Gary , i tried following your directions in another thread, but i had no luck. will definately post if i ever get a workable solution. I'm running far too many criminal Empty4's on all the computers i'm using, so this would be very helpfull. i've also tried setting everything up on a server so all the computers can draw from the nas/server/cube, but never get the time to finish and test. dont even know if it's possible yet???
hope i didnt confuse,
regards
cuz

Re: moving files in windows7
My god it is confusing.
I didn't know about the compatibility problems, but here's what I do to help manage the confusion of multiple Empty4 instances across multiple machines. (I rent a VPS to run tests).
a) I make a central 'experts' folder in a cloud drive, e.g. Google Drive or Dropbox.
b) I install multiple Empty4 instances in their own directories (not default) under my username.
c) I download and configure SyncBack to synchronize/copy from the master experts drive in the cloud to the individual Empty4 instances. I don't copy chart settings or .tpl but I could. I exclude copying .ex4 and *.tmp and *.TMP files. I have 'runs' which do a two-way sync, and runs which do a one-way force copy from master (cloud drive) to instance so if you've munged stuff up and want to overwrite from master to instance you can.

Hi Matt, mbkennel wrote: I didn't know about the compatibility problems, but here's what I do to help manage the confusion of multiple Empty4 instances across multiple machines. (I rent a VPS to run tests). .
this sounds like what i'd like to do except use my server to host everything and only use it as my 'cloud', i was wondering if you have any latency issues using your method. I would think that any one of your services go's down, like 'no connection' or bad packets etc etc, has it happened to you? especially when the markets go crazy.
also, have you run an arbitrage EA this way? i ask this as the ea is very, very dependant on a very fast connection to the criminal otherwise can get you into very bad whipsaws or DD.
There is software to run a setup like yours with-in my network and this is the way i think i will move forward, if you are using Empty4 this way, then it must be. I dont have fibre links between my systems, but a full gigabit is more than fast enough for me with SSD's and a REVO drive for my main PC.
Thanks for all your help in the passed too,
regards
