I don't know yet why, but as soon as I changed the TF to a higher one, the TDI signals sent to TDesk were somehow different. As long as you keep it to the lowest TDI TF, nothing like that happens. Very strange and completely new to me...

Maybe someone more experienced has an explanation and/or a clean solution for that.

Hi Ehrenmat,

I still don't get what you mean, sorry.

I have been playing around with H4 charts with TDI-MTF set to H4 time frame, signals are fine. I do not change my chart time frames.

Okay... Maybe, I was just over-cautious and caused more confusion with that. It was a rare scenario and propably no one will reproduce it. Deleted the Note as it is not important and rather confusing. In this case, I'm sorry.

Cheers,

Mat

No apology needed, Ehrenmat. When the markets settle down a bit, perhaps we may see some interesting results.

Hi Peter and Mat. I second everything you Guy's say. Nothing has been easy for the past four weeks. Trading has been difficult all round manually, Tdesk or indicators, it does not matter.

We just have to hang in. Patience, patience ;)

Also remembering Bob's mantra of trade so we can trade another day i.e. lot sizes that allow an account to ride out the tough times without even coming close to a margin call.

TMA breach indicator

Post by pacinvest »

GB special 4 example 2.jpg
Greetings Friends

I need some help. Could someone please code a TD V2 version of the TMA band indy, ‘TMA+GC mladen’ attached below. For the TD version of TMA+CG mladen I am looking for the indy to signal for a counter trade when a breach of the outer band lines is made. It needs to have an option to trade in every tick mode and I am wanting the indy signal to stay active for X candles following the breach. X is an external variable that we can adjust, please. Candles, in this case, refer preferably to the day timeframe, or if it needs to refer to the week timeframe we could start with the signal to remain active for one week. To make this mtf compliant the candle number could be the signal timeframe -1 or down one timeframe.

The strategy …………….

I like to visualize this strategy on the Day timeframe. We are counter trading a breach of the week timeframe outer TMA band and using confirmation signals of a fast and a slower week timeframe RSI cross TD V2 indicators.

Rules:

Enter a short trade when the week timeframe top TMA band is breached and both RSI cross TD V2 indies have signaled short within X candles of the breach signal, (still working on X value, but using 5 at the moment). Opposite for breach of the lower band.

The exit rule is close trade when both RSI cross TD V2 indicators reverse their signal,

Indy settings

TMA+CG mladen, half length 20, Deviations 2.6, week timeframe
RSI cross TDV2 slow period 2, fast period 2, week timeframe
RSI cross TD V2 slow period 7, fast period 2, week timeframe

Some notes on the example chart:

The visual display of the RSI & Sto7 and moving averages of the Sto7 is adapted from Leon’s set up at Wavegarrick's HGI Trading, thanks Leon. These indies are there as visual confirmation only and testing the strategy. They are all based on the week timeframe.

I am setting a 50 pip break even on the trade entry which almost always deals with the issue of the PA continuing to trend rather than reverse. The beauty of these breach entries is that there is almost always some sort of retrace from the breach that gives you at worst a BE close which is often followed by another breach entry opportunity. I like the money management implications of this. The combination of the two RSI indies and the breach of TMA often hold off entering on the first of a series of breaches and often this is a good thing providing a safer entry ready to take off in the counter-trend direction. It is interesting to consider this setup in the context of what the big players are doing…………………………….. Some of you will immediately see what I am alluding to.

Four trades are indicated by the shaded ellipses.
Trade 1 PA has breached TMA outer bands and both RSI indies have signaled enter long. PA retraces for a double bottom and trade is closed for a small profit with BE rule.
Trade 2 is a second breach followed 3-4 candles later by both RSI indies signaling long, Valid entry. If BE is set you are out with BE close when one candle spikes down against your trade. With no BE used exit is taken when both RSI indies signal short. So my elipse drawn is not strictly following my stated BE rule - it shows the trade as it would be without a BE set - sorry about this inconsistency on my part.
Trade 3 breach of top TMA band and both RSI indies signaling short. Exit with both RSI indies signaling long
Trade 4 is breach of top TMA band followed four candles latter by confirmation signal short from the two RSI indies. This trade remains open at the time the screenshot was made.

TDESK makes it possible with this system to easily check 28 pairs once a day which is all that is needed. Full automation is also possible. Probably most people will be thinking fine but there are not many trades. The results of visual backtesting this strategy on 28 pairs over 15 months were that on average there were 2 breach entries per week. I am OK with that when you look at the pips these trades rack up. There was no pair that I was unhappy with trading with this strategy. Negative swaps will need to be considered, but actually, with this strategy, you tend not to sit on trades that are either in DD or have gone to flat or ranging PA, so perhaps even the negative swap trades can be taken – that needs more testing.

I am now manually trading this strategy (with TDESK help of course) on a small live account and keen to develop it further using TDESK. I am also working on a second set of rules to guide trend continuation re-entries following a closed breach trade if week timeframe trending criteria are met. This is the journey of PA from top to bottom of TMA band, but essentially stepping out of the market when PA goes into a ranging pattern on the week timeframe. Working with Peaky led me here……………………..(thanks again Steve and Bob and all).

If progress continues with the continuation entries I will post rules after a bit more testing. Its quite possible that will end up as a separate strategy as it has a different risk profile, (so different MM approach is needed) also different signal logic. Probably easier to manage with separate TDESK setups in the end. I believe the TMA breach strategy is profitable without the continuation trades. Any worthwhile results will be posted.
Well, that’s an introduction, hopefully, more interesting results to come down the track. This one will not be quick to forward test, but I think it will work.
Cheers
Vince

Thanks leon

Once I get some trades rolling it will be fascinating to see how many of them show up in your entries as well.
Leon note that I finally settled on the slow setting of 7 for the RSI. For some reason there was bugger all difference between the RSI cross slow setting of 26 and slow setting of 7, so I just went for the 7. I don't understand this but that is what I observed.

I got stuck on an offshore island for several weeks of bad weather so sat down to nut out how to trade on 15 mins a day screen time.................we'll see.

As i can understand that setting of 26 is to see whether the trend is continuing or not. I think this is useful.

Hi Vince,

Thank you for your strategy it looks promising :hi: :good: .

Am I wrong when I see your trade 2 is actually a BE trade and not a 320 pips trade because of the large pin bar 4 to 5 candles further ahead??

Does your forward result confirm the back test so far ??

Cheers

Hi Jan

Oh dear I have been a bit remiss with notes on trade 2, but good to focus on this situation. You are correct given the BE rule I stated the downwards pin on trade 2 would have given a BE. It is worth noting that without the BE set the RSI indicators would have told you to stay in this trade. This scenario plays out from time to time where the 50 pip BE really works against you as such because you are out of a trade that goes on to become profitable and in fact does not produce a large DD on the way. In this case using the BE, however, you do not lose anything either. In the case of a really large move down against your trade, you are protected once having reached +50 pips. If you don't reach + 50 pips your exposure to the downside is limited by the close signal from the two RSI indicators. Some people may place emergency stops but I am not doing so at this point. There are certainly some nasty spikes to be aware if no BE is in place, but those really nasty pins do virtually always retrace and then the RSI indies give you a reasonable signal. The BE idea may not stand up in time as the best way to limit losses. Admittedly setting a 50 pip BE across 28 pairs is a pretty crude approach at the least it should be adjusted to the volatility of the pair, but that can happen.

So from this example, you can see there is an option here to use the BE or not. I am running with this BE for now because I am exploring the risk to reward MM options with this strategy. I don't want to go into details now but will once I have more trade examples to show. As always exits and MM are the real test of a strategy.

Janus I have only started the forward testing this week on my live account and there are no new trades so far this week. I have a watch on AUDNZD at the moment but it has a ways to go before the breach is on. The market has a lot of pairs ranging at the moment.

Will correct my notes thanks jan

cheers

Good morning, Ehremat. When the TDI MTF indi is set to "current" time frame, the indicator window goes blank. Is there any way this can be fixed ?

Thanks, peter.
