Slopey MA cross

Post by SteveHopwood »

SERIOUS WARNING
  • Most Forex traders lose all their money.
Using the robot posted here in trading Forex does not guarantee success.
Trading this robot could lead to serious financial loss.
Trading this robot without understanding its underlying trading strategies guarantees traders will lose their money.
This is not a set-and-forget ea. There is no such thing and anyone who tells you there is, is either a liar or an idiot. This EA will need manual intervention.
At best, a trading robot is only 90% as good as the manual strategy it trades. At best. At worst, it can be much less effective. If the strategy is rubbish, so is the robot.
To trade this robot, you have to understand:
    • - How to use EA's.
      - How to use the Slope indi from Nanningbob's 10.2 system:
      • - first visit Jemook's thread at http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 562#p17562 Here you will find where to start reading about Nanninbob's 10.2 and learn to trade. Bob's stuff is the best thing to arrive during my time trading Forex. It is massive. Jem's thread will help you get started if this is new to you. I once stated that Recovery may well turn out to be Bob's lasting legacy to us retail Forex traders. I was wrong; this is actually going to be Slope, and it will have a part to play in everything we do from now on.

DO NOT USE THIS EA ON A LIVE TRADING ACCOUNT. IT IS EXPERIMENTAL.

Introduction
Here is yet another experiment in using Slope to show the overall trend and using one of the other usual suspects to trigger the trade - in this case a Moving Average cross.

The number of possible permutations of MA method/period/applied price etc is colossal. I am demoing a ratio of 1:4 fast ma to slow ma period, starting at FastMaPeriod = 2 and SlowMaPeriod = 8. If this is successful, then great. If not, I shall try 3:12, then 4:16 etc, all on the H1. You guys try different ratios and timeframes.

The inputs are the usual suspects; the moving averages are fully configurable. Remember to make your chart mas and ea ma inputs the same when you change either of them. By default, the bot looks for an MA cross only at the start of each new candle. To cut down on cpu use, it also only reads the indicators at the open of each new candle, so the chart display will quickly be out of date. To make the ea look for a cross at every tick, set EveryTickMode to 'true'.

Trade exit
This is by take profit/stop loss, the usual basic mptm features and a recross of the moving average. The close on recross only activates if the trade is in profit.

Slope
Guys, you really need to understand what the Slope indi tells you, so do not take this brief summary as The Definitive Statement. Basically, Slope tells us this:
  • - >= 0.4: look to buy and take profit somewhere along the line.
    - >= 0.8: look to buy and hold the trade, and add to the position as the market continues to rise.
    - <= -0.4: look to sell and take profit somewhere along the line.
    - <= -0.8: look to sell and hold the trade, and add to the position as the market continues to fall.
We have zznbrm to thank for his coding of Slope. Without it, this thread could not exist. Thanks, zznbrm. Frank Muir describes himself as "I only did a couple cosmetic things to that indi." but they are damn good cosmetics, so out thanks to Frank also.

You do not need Slope on your chart or in your indi folder; Baluda sent me the code that brings the calculation 'in-house' a long time ago. Our thanks to Paul for that.

In conclusion
Usual conclusion. Let's see if this mouse has a decent squeak.

:D

Hey Steve, I'm keen to give this one a try...it is quite similar to some adaptations I made to AussieDoc's Duck n Bob, see my post here

http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 328#p16328

The main difference is that after the cross of the MA, I waited for the candle to close above/below the 3MA, trading on the Daily chart.
My close is once there is a close back over the 3MA and I used mptm to set BE at +100 pips and then used JS 50.

I've set this EA up on daily charts but will also have a look at other time frames

Shelly, your post reminded me to add an every tick mode, so V1a is in post 1. You do not need it but might like the cpu-saving tweak.

By default, the bot looks for an MA cross only at the start of each new candle. To cut down on cpu use, it also only reads the indicators at the open of each new candle, so the chart display will quickly be out of date. To make the ea look for a cross at every tick, set EveryTickMode to 'true'.

Great thanks for adding EveryTickMode, I may demo both true & false versions

Hello fellow traders,
I beg your pardon of my lack of knowledge....but how to set this new toy ?
Basically, I didn't understood if the bot requires both the higher and lower TF .
Does anybody can help me , attaching an example set ?
I would like to test the EA using a 1m TF (I'm mad enough).
I'm sorry for this, probably, silly question : maybe this EA is "linked" to another previous one (where all my questions have already been answered ) , if so, please link me to the proper thread.
Thanks

Hi Steve,
the risk calulation (lotsize) seems to be not correct.
The EA tried to open this odrer:

'1234614130': order sell 307.90 GBPNZD opening at 0.00000 sl: 0.00000 tp: 0.00000 failed [Not enough money]

10k Account, risk was at 50%...

cheers

Read the first post carefully. it explains everything. You need to properly understand NB 10.2 before you try slope variations, check out the NB section. Anymore newbie questions post in the newbie section before you get SteveHopWooded (Trust me you don't want to).

Sound advice there, fino. I am never desperately impressed by people who do not even read post 1 in one of my threads properly, and have occasionally been known to point this out.

Thanks Steve for the Slopey MA Cross. I am fond of MAs. Thinking we could add a martingale option since we have the slope as our filter for the MA crosses. So if price hits our preset sl, slopey could enter the next trade with the marty based lot size. I know someone would give a lecture on the disadvantages of martingale system, but it is worth a try since they trades are not random
