Highest High / Lowest Low

Guys...I've been trading forex for quite a few years now and I should know better by now, but this is one that just keeps confusing me.

Could one of our guru's please clarify exactly what is determined as the highest high or the lowest low?

Eg. If I want to determine the lowest low on a chart is the lowest low, the lowest point of a 'down' candle only or is it the lowest point of 'any' candle (ie. either an 'up' candle or a 'down' candle)

and vice versa for the highest high.

Also, when determining the HH or LL, does it matter how zoomed in I have my chart? EG. Obviously the more the chart is zoomed in, the less candles are displayed...in this case is their a prescribed length of time/number of candles I should look back at to determine HH/LL

HH / LL depends on the context. You have to specify what bars you're looking at: the most recent 10 bars, the entire chart, whatever.

Are you trying to follow somebody's procedure or strategy? If so, you should find out how THEY define HH / LL. They might have their own oddball way of defining HH / LL. If you tell us what you're trying to do, maybe we can figure out the answer for your situation.

In code, and in most non-code situations, "Lowest Low" means just that -- the lowest Low. The absolute lowest tick during the period. Doesn't matter if the candle was up, down, or sideways. MQL (and most trading languages) define HH / LL functions that say "ending at candle N, what is the LL in the previous MM candles?"
