Sorry it this is a dumb question. What at would be the guidelines to manually specify long/short direction? A higher tf trend? In this case perhaps this could also be automated.
Mark,

Yours is not a dumb question. Indeed, as a Forum member you are in the right to inquire.

I am almost done with:

• filter(s) to avoid whipsaws; and
• method to determine the directional bias;

and these shall become part of the automated order placements in due course of time. But this is a huge task and shall take considerable time.

I have been posting the readings on Long/Short directions, at times with charts. But, for easy reference, I shall henceforth place these in Post 1 as updates.

The VPS is online. But I shall only reactivate the EA after thorough testing -- another 5 hours, or so.

Khalid

Hi Khalid,

Thanks for the response. I am looking forward to guidelines on how to setup directional bias. I looked at the PDF docs on currency indices and I am guessing you have used the trend in the currency indices.

I have looked into the code for the 1.3 version of the EAs. The only way this EA can place long trades when TradeLong is false is when there are pending lines on the chart. Presumably these lines could have been left over from running the EA earlier when TradeLong was set to true.

I have done a small patch that does not place buy/sell trades if TradeLong/TradeShort is set to false. The changes are in the HasBuyFilled/HasSellFilled functions.

Updated version attached.

Edit: Attachment v1.3.1 removed as per Khalid's request.

Khalid: Thank you markft; your kind cooperation is acknowledged and appreciated.

Presently, I do not feel it the right time to say any more on filtering the trades than what I have already posted. Your patient will be appreciated.

Thank you for posting 1.3.1.

However, your presumption about pending lines being left over from running the EA earlier is wrong.

Khalid
No problem Khalid, I have found your posts inspirational and informative so looking forward to your other posts when you feel it is the right time.

Hmm, apart from left over lines, I couldn't think of any other condition that would cause the 1.3 version to trade long when told not to; but obviously there must have been another reason. The 1.3.1 version I had posted only was supposed to address this case e.g. if there were left over lines it would not act on them and place buy/sell orders if buy/sell is disabled.

Your version(s) posted above:
• goes Long, and stays Long; and
• goes Short, and stays Short.

This means any unrealized profits would be unprotected against a sudden adverse move.

Such trading is not congruent with either with the Trading Conditions, nor the core beliefs set out in Twenty-eight Valuable Rules; both in Post 1. Therefore, I ask you to please remove the codes you have posted, and replace them with one with ability to go flat when opposite trade conditions are met.

I would appreciate any contribution by any member which is in harmony with whatever I have characterized in Post 1.

I request your understanding in this matter. This is what I know: the number one cause of failure in trading is because of the failure to correctly understand, and control, risk.

Khalid
Khalid,

I found the reason why my patch would not close positions. I can post an updated EA if you wish; however I understand Steve sent you an updated version you have been testing. I didn't know at the time, hence I barged in to fix what I thought was the reason for the issue you reported. If you agree I think it would be best for me to wait for the new version and help if a bug fix or other improvement is required on the new version. Otherwise there could be different branched versions of the EA floating around which can be confusing for members. I am always happy to help with the development of your EA; please just let me know. You have been contributing so much with your ideas and happy to do what I can to help.

Even though Steve has done a tremendous job, I am still looking to improve it :!: Moreover, I understand Steve has a very generous and open way of working, and continually welcomes others to contribute. Consequently, any input from your side is welcome.

I have sent you a PM. Please go right ahead. But please do not post here; we need to privately test the code first.

Warning: I can be frustatingly difficult to work with.

Khalid
I like your attitude :D

No problem, will send you the updated version that should resolve the trade direction issue.

Khalid: Look at fourteen period and Twenty-one period Linear weighted, open/closed.

Post Script: I was taking some fairly large losses due to the frequent crossing of the lines.
Just for fun, I tried several different periods. Then I remembered Jiva's EA
http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... p?f=5&t=27
which used 21 SMA open/closed, a very similar system, coded by Mgft, George, and Steve.
Transposing first 21 LWMA, and now 21 SMA open/closed, I see virtually no noise on the H4.
There are only wonderful, smooth, sweeping arcs, and no chop.
Jiva's EA thread has become quiet, but the error may have only been using a 5 min TF, rather than H4.
I suspect Period One will do well on lower time frames, such as the 5/15.
I will try to combine the two wonderful ideas. I really like the simplicity.
Just starting to demo this on H4. Too early to say if this thinking is silly curve-fitting.

I shall be greatful for advise where to host, please :?:

Thank you.

Cannot do the demo from my location because we have no grid electricity 10 hours out of 24, and the ISP is forced to go off for about 30 minutes every 2 hours. :x :x :x

I have used Mammoth VPS in Australia and Commercial Network Services in their NY datacentre. Both are very reliable and support has been great, though I would recommend Commercial Network Services as they are using Windows Hyper-V which is a better platform.

Hi Khalaad,

Thanks very much to you and Steve Hopwood for creating this EA.

It is trading currency pairs very nicely, but just does not send any trades for US30 index.

The EA is installed in an FXCM Empty4 platform.

I have made sure the lot size is minimum 1, increase the maximum spread artificially to 100 just in case this is the problem, increase buffer pips to 1, increased the hidden pips to 100, and the EA icon has a smiley face.

No error messages in the EXPERTS or JOURNAL folder.

After two days, still no trade. Any idea why this is so ?

Thanking you in advance.

Cheers,
Peter
