Automatic Loss Recovery System (ALR)

A couple of additional points that you may not have considered:

1. Get the entry right, in a trending market, and you wont need more than a couple of pushes.

2. Dont try to close out on a pip move, rather monitor your equity and only close all trades when actually at BE. This can be coded on the basis of recording the account balance before you enter your first trade and then only close all trades when the account equity returns to this level. Or if you like, pushes into a small profit.
Hey RedLineFred,

my suggestion was to have one of the EA input parameters configurable by the user to monitor the net profit of either:
- the original order plus opened ALR trades only
- all the trades on the pair
- all the trades on all pairs

And when the net profit of the relevant positions reaches a configurable profit value, they are closed.

Any chance you could make the EA using the strategy posted here: http://www.stevehopwoodforex.com/phpBB3 ... 100#p95199
Hi Dewey,
It is already scribbled on an important piece of paper beside me. :good:
I just haven't got around to it yet. I'm just learning to write EAs, so very basic stuff still. No idea how to look at slope yet, but I do know a mate who uses an MA in his trading. The system states that at buy entry the MA must be higher than 40 (?) bars previous. Sort of ensures a rise overall. It is a daily system for CFDs in the share market & seems to work OK. Maybe we could use that to start?

... The most ALR turns I could see was 3.
I just had a look with your template at the trade starting on 16.12.2013. Different broker, so different 4 hour candles. My entry was a little later, also exit was a couple of candles later. But I would probably have had 9 trades before reaching the exit.

Have a look again using your template but this time drill down to the 1 hour or even 15 minute timeframes if needed to see if you would get more swings. Don't forget that price will determine the number of swings. So using a 4 hour chart may hide some of the lower timeframe vibrations.

Mick

Hi

If you could give me that rules line by line in a straightforward manner in the other discussion. ..it could save me a ton of time for implementation.

Cheers

7 = 0.28

9 = 0.49

So your net exposure is 0.38 lots.
I don't know if this sounds stupid (please forgive me if it was said before) but what if after you have several turns, with several trades in each direction, the next time you have a turn instead of opening a new trade and piling up in that direction you just close the corresponding amount of lots in the opposite direction?

Let's keep it simple imagining there are no spreads. In that case once we hit the SL point for another turn we would be closing some lots from the direction we are leaving so that the total lot size is balanced in favor of the new turn direction. Once we run out of lots to close after several turns we add new lots on each turn.

The key would be to play with the spread costs, but with the logic properly done we would keep the total accumulated lot size at a sensible level. At least your will be less likely to run out of funds to open a new trade.

I don't know, just brain storming.

Hi Spider,

Thanks for the offer. I have blown-off a not-so-pressing job & started on the EA. :smile:
I have also sent a PM to Dewey to get some more details for his entry criteria as I also wasn't clear on some issues. Hopefully I can get to this tomorrow & knock it off. Am about to take a break from the computer before calling it a night.

Cheers,

for testing purpose, we can just use a random entry criteria, there is no need to find profitable trading strategies and spending time to coding them.

the purpose of this thread is to collect ideas on how to come up with an ALR EA which then each one of us can apply to his own trading strategy and recover trades that went against us..

i think we are drifting away from this initial goal.. just a thought..

I think we need both. Madpipa has already shown that random entries don't work in the long run. I think a high win rate on the initial trade, as well as selection of the right pair(s) and ALR zone will be important for this to succeed.

We need both a trade manager so people can test this on different strategies and a small number of good strategies to test as well so we can make a determination whether this is really viable for long term use.

Interesting idea because I was wondering about something like this. I know a trader who does something similar. It will take me a while to be able to run some numbers unless someone else wants to take a stab.

This is actually a very important point that I had missed! Like I said, visual back testing is very limited and on a H4 chart you wouldn't see all the turns. I cannot seem to go lower than a 30 minute chart that far back, but here on a 30 M you will see 10 turns (arrows show where you place a trade, not the direction)
