Gertje: a hedged grid trader

Are you using Gertje or Gertje Plus

Something is drasticly wrong there. You should not have any basket closed with an overall loss, unless you set your TP target too small and by the time the criminal closes your orders it can go to negative especially on large lot sizes, like you have there. It is impossible to be in a negative closed Balance position with this EA. DD can happen, but that is another issue. Your balance should keep growing by every closed basket.

Hi Tehcount and Nubika,

I have looked at my CPU's here at home and i only ran Gertje here. My set file must be at my work CPU's for both getje and plus, please bare with me and i will send you the set file as soon as i get there.

As for what you have mentioned, i would probably have taken much smaller positions, i tend to do that with all my EA's, and i would also have used much lower TF's. i think my understanding of how Gertje works is lacking.

i have downloaded Tehcount's set file and will implement, and run the tests again. There is too much of a difference in the results and i don't want to send anyone in the wrong direction.


the bad news is i cant retrieve the settings from the home comp, but i have gertje plus still running at work, here is a snapshot from the myfxbook as of this morning. it's a position that is open now and will be able to check all settings and send you the old set file for both if i have first gertje there too.

There is'nt much to change so it's possible my TF was wrong or GBPUSD is no good for Gertje.

I hope this helps you with the quest to add that function to the EA.

I am running GBPJPY :
Pips between trades: 26
Lot size is : 0.3
Cash profit target is $45
Account size is $2000

I was visually watching the EA turning a negative profit level to positive. This is the point we are looking to minimize loss and close all trades when we have too many open trades on each side as you mentioned.

In this case : I had the 2 initial buy and sell trades open + 1 extra buy trades
on the other side I had the original sell trade from the opening + 3 extra sell trades. The DD turned to $0 almost at the time the EA was just about to open the fifth trade. A couple of pips away from opening the fifth.
Maybe the way to do it is to monitor equity level and if we have a certain number of trades already open on both sides, the EA will close off all trades at the $0 point. This way we clean the table and start again.
I am sure this situation will hardly ever happen, but just in case.

So in summary I had 2 x buy and 4 x sell trades just about to open the fifth, when the DD turned to $0.

Time frame is irrelevant, George. There are two things that most affect this EA:

• 1) The distance between the grid lines and hence the trade fill prices.
  2) How well the market is heading off in one particular direction. When this happens, tp is hit quickly.

I am finding it best to look at the chart and start the ea after a decent move in one direction. What I am hoping to do is catch the bounce back. I do not allow instant re-entry following tp, so that I can do what I have just described.

i've set up TehCount's set file (thank you), on a chart on the Alpari criminal. I will follow this and report back. the only change i made was my magic number.

Trust me to start this EA when the market looked like it was turning. It just went completely the opposite way, hehe.

I only use the original Gertje EA. Did not have a chance to play with the Plus version. I did run at least 12 different setups for a week on different pip steps and TPs, and found that a small pipstep is not good. (I have tested 10 pip and 5 pip distances. )

Set your TP to a figure which can be achived by 1 trade only. Say 20 pip distance and $10 TP on a 0.1 lot size. This way you will have rapid closures and only a few open trades. But experiment with a number of pip distances and TP figures and you will find the best on the end. I will keep testing as well with different pairs and will report the findings.

GBPUSD is not the best for this EA because it is ranging a lot. Find pairs which has at least 100+ pip daily movement and not too volatile. This is why I selected AUDUSD because if it moves it will move at least 50 - 60 pips in one direction with no major pullbacks. Pullbacks normally only 20 - 25 pips.

I am very happy to be a Member of this forum and to all users. Let me introduce myself first, to all members and this forum. I dont have much knowledge in forex trading. After see your forum & MPTM EA, i gain some confidence in forex trading. Without much knowledge in general terms of trading EA, I invested and lost money, its part of game, I agree.

I would like to give some suggestion to this Gertje EA, it may wrong or may be foolish. But i would like to share my view through this forum regarding this Gertje EA.

Suggestion 1: Instead of opening immediate buy and sell order, sending a grid of pending buy and sell trades by X pips apart from the current price. I feel, it will avoid initial spread loss, Since first order pair (buy and Sell) not going to give any profit.

Suggestion 2: For Example Market is going long position, If first two Buy orders is triggered (with out trigerring the respective sell hedging grid order) and then reversing means, Closing a first order (Buy) with some +pips ( by trailing stop from the second order price). Once first order is closed, all pending hedge Grid order to be closed and new hedge Grid order to be opened with same X Pips from the second order price.
*If two opposite grids orders triggered without any profit then we will follow the existing trading conditions of basket profit is applicable.

If above suggestion is valid, Please share your view or otherwise advice me.

I cannot thank you enough for this info,
going to save me a lot of time testing.
What i would like to do for the sake of testing, i will enter 15pips and your opinion on say EURJAP. It can trend nicely too, but it does have some volatility, but not as much as GBP in my opinion, and can be very profitable per pip.
your opinion Frank for testing, something you maybe have'nt tested?

So far I have only tested AUDUSD, GBPUSD EURUSD and GBPJPY.
I have 2 current DEMO's running with the AUDUSD and GBPJPY pairs. Both accounts had 1 x close already today. Markets are only opening now so activity will start soon.
It will be sleep time for me here in the land of Oz. This is why I really need automated trading solution, because of the market opening times are not really suitable for us down under.
Cannot stay up all night to do manual trading.

I was also thinking about the JPY pairs because they tend to trend a lot.

On LIVE account I use the AUDUSD pair as per my earlier setup.

Next week I will start up one of my idling notebooks and start to run at least another 10 Empty4 accounts with different setups and see what transpires.

I have heaps of PC power.

3 notebooks and the main PC at my office desk at home. I only run the notebooks 24/5.
